Friday edition: the calm before the storm ⛈️

It’s Friday the 13th and the energy is exactly what you’d expect — tense, chaotic, and borderline apocalyptic.

I’m just trying to get to work, but downtown feels like it’s gearing up for something way bigger than a “peaceful protest.” They’re busing in crowds, boarding up businesses, and I just passed the National Guard staging two hotels down from mine.

I fly home tomorrow, but with talk of “demonstrations” blocking the freeway and the airport… I might be stuck in this city longer than planned.

This doesn’t feel peaceful. It feels planned.
Good on Governor Abbott for calling in backup — because it’s getting real out here.

To everyone downtown: stay aware, stay safe, and don’t assume the calm before the storm means it won’t hit.

2nd Battalion, 7th Marines ain’t weekend warriors. They’re front-line infantry. Urban warfare is what they do. This ain’t crowd control this is tactical.

Some days the job is chaotic, the flights are delayed, and the emails pile up… but today? Today I survived with the power of Hot Cheetos, Chamoy pickles, Nerd ropes, and a strawberries & cream cup that has to be laced with something because why is it THAT good??? Addictive behavior and zero regrets. Per my last location? I’m clearly fighting demons with snacks and winning 😤🍓🔥

I woke up at 4am, rerouted twice, and got stranded in the airport while a storm over Houston threw a full-on fit. The real chaos? Trying to call my manager for rental car approval like it wasn’t an actual travel emergency. Sir, if you require advance notice, maybe you should be available in advance. Just a thought. 😤✈️

Per My Last Location: Chattanooga, TN 🍑🧳✨

I left for this trip at 1AM on a Monday—half-awake, half-feral, and 100% hangry. I tried to hit Whataburger for survival snacks, but of course I ordered it to the wrong location. No time to fix it—I had a flight to catch and absolutely no dignity to spare. So I starved until Einstein Bros Bagels opened like the gates of carby heaven. Their turkey sandwich? Life-changing. Saved me from committing a crime on Concourse C.

Monday night I spiraled into Del Taco (Taco Bell’s more stable cousin), and then the universe humbled me REAL quick—I deleted a Word doc I’d worked on all day. GONE. Evaporated. Like a cruel little magic trick. Oh, and I fell down the stairs three separate times, because apparently I was moving through the week like a sleep walking Sims character

Tuesday was sweet—literally and emotionally. Got to have lunch with my brother downtown 🥹 We don’t get to hang out much, so even though Jimmy John’s was giving “bland boyfriend,” the vibes were warm and nostalgic. That night, I skipped dinner and went full sugar baby on myself with cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries, then hit up City Café, where they gave me pancakes instead of a chocolate chip waffle and forgot the syrup. Chaos. But the fries were fire so I stayed humble.

Wednesday, I reconnected with my grandparents at a Southern buffet called Fernando’s, where the fried chicken is hot and the gossip is hotter. It was giving old-school family warmth and real sweet tea energy. 💕 Dinner was from Attack of the Katsu—beautiful in theory, bland in practice. BUT they had mochi doughnuts, and those chewy little sugar halos had me in a chokehold.

Thursday unlocked my “family reunion: part two” side quest. Lunch with my aunt and cousin at Scottie’s on the River, where I experienced my full oyster redemption arc. I’ve always said I hated oysters. Turns out, I just hadn’t had good ones. Shrimp, lump crab, river views—I felt like Poseidon’s southern stepdaughter.

Then came my holy land: Mr. Burrito Grill. It’s like Chipotle if it had seasoning, soul, and immigrant grandparents in the kitchen. A spiritual experience. I’d leave a Yelp review in tears.

Friday, I wrapped it all up with a solo date: a pitcher of margaritas + burnt ends over gouda grits. And just when I was ready to vibe in peace, the airport hit me with a flight delay and mid-tier chicken & waffles. Would I really be me if there wasn’t a final inconvenience to end the week with a dramatic fade-out?

So yeah. I laughed, I cried, I faceplanted. I reconnected with my people. I discovered oysters. I fell down the stairs like I was coded wrong. I emotionally supported myself with mochi doughnuts. And I’ve got plenty of footage to prove it.

Per my last location, Chattanooga gave everything it needed to give—with a few bruises and a bagel on the side. 🎥💅
