My suburb in Sydney has more brothels than most. Some have operated in the shopping area since the 1980’s. I know cause I visited them 4 outreach. Sometimes I’ll point them out to people - they look surprised. 25 years of decrim in NSW. Not many know and even less care.
Sex worker and state coordinator of Respect Inc, Lulu Holiday, said decriminalisation will be a “life-changing policy shift”.
“Decriminalisation would mean I wouldn’t have to worry every time a client contacts me that it might be a police officer.''

Decriminalisation is not ‘no regulation’. When criminal laws are removed the same civil laws and regulations that apply to other businesses will apply to the s*x industry, including Workplace Health & Safety (WHS).
“While decriminalisation will be a life changing policy shift for sex workers and our families because we’ll no longer be criminalised, the rest of Queensland thinks it has already happened and will probably not even notice it has changed.”

@ComradeChutney@ShannonFentiman Yes, we know we're not commodities. You're the ones that insist women are products. We're consensual sexual service providers.
Stop conflating sex trafficking and sex work.
@feministbirther@ShannonFentiman The research also comes from consultation with individual sex workers and their representative organisations. It is based on the documented outcomes of countries and states with decrim, as well as the well documented failure of the nordic model in countries like Sweden.

@msediewyatt @Frankie_Jam3s @ShannonFentiman Half the sex workers I know have advanced degrees in feminism. If you want women to have more choice, advocate for their basic social needs: housing, DV resources, affordable & accessible healthcare, affordable childcare.

@MillyMischiefx @NobodyCaresJim@gfeholly@ShannonFentiman 2/2... removing that activity from the criminal code. We currently have legalization in Qld. Full decrim means there will be no 'special' laws for sex work. Instead it will be under all the normal industrial, health, advertising and workplace health and safety laws.
@MillyMischiefx @NobodyCaresJim@gfeholly@ShannonFentiman 1/2 Decriminalization means that criminal and civil penalties are removed and that the activity is no longer subject to 'special' laws. Legalisation refers to a legislative model that makes legal certain aspects of an activity, or a specific way of doing that activity without...
The Queensland Law Reform Commission found that the current laws stigmatise sex workers, increase their vulnerability to exploitation and violence and fail to protect their human rights.
