You see how almost everyone's criticism is directed to the offender and not Christianity as a religion, same should be done when it involves a Muslim (and believers of other religions). Because if a Muslim had done this, many people will push narratives, making it a religious thing and not focus on who did the wrong, and such acts fuel discrimination.
PROF. MANSUR YELWAโS RESIGNATION AS CHIEF IMAM OF ATBU CENTRAL MOSQUE: A MATTER THAT DESERVES SERIOUS ATTENTION
As we all know, Prof. Mansur Yelwa has served as the Chief Imam of the ATBU Central Mosque for almost two decades.
According to his statement, one of the major reasons behind his resignation was the decision by the university management to allocate a plot of land to the Tijjaniyya Students Association without consulting him.
Some may argue that, as an appointee, he had no legal right to be consulted. However, after nearly twenty years of service, under multiple Vice-Chancellors, and given his knowledge and experience in religious affairs within the university community, one could argue that extending such courtesy and seeking his opinion would have been beneficial. Sometimes, experience allows one to foresee challenges that others may overlook.
More importantly, Prof. Mansur raised concerns about the potential implications of this decision. ATBU is a public university with students from different Islamic groups and religious backgrounds. If one group is granted a dedicated place of worship, other groups may reasonably request the same. If such requests are denied, questions of fairness, discrimination, and unequal treatment may arise.
The issue, therefore, is not necessarily about opposition to any particular Islamic group, but about maintaining unity, fairness, and harmony within a diverse university environment.
I respectfully call on the ATBU management to revisit this matter with urgency and engage all relevant stakeholders. Prof. Mansur Yelwa is a respected scholar whose experience and contribution to the university community should not be disregarded lightly.
Wallahu Aโalam.
