Ada Morrison a été internée dans un asile du Connecticut en 1893, à trente ans, par son propre mari — qui voulait une épouse plus jeune.

Deux médecins l’ont examinée pendant dix minutes. Ils ont conclu qu’une femme intelligente était, évidemment, folle.
Ada a été enfermée dans l’asile pendant quatre ans, étiquetée comme folle simplement parce qu’elle était instruite.
Elle a tenté de s’évader huit fois.
Elle a été capturée sept.
Elle a réussi une fois.
Ce furent quatre années de tentatives — escalader des fenêtres, forcer des serrures, soudoyer des gardiens, se cacher dans des chariots de linge.
La même intelligence qui avait causé son internement fut celle qui lui permit de s’évader.
Cette photographie en tintype, de 1897, montre Ada après sa fuite définitive, à trente-quatre ans. Elle porte les cicatrices de ses tentatives précédentes :
— un bras cassé après une chute du deuxième étage ;
— des brûlures en escaladant des tuyaux de vapeur bouillants ;
— des marques de fouet comme punition de ses évasions ratées.
Elle tient les papiers d’internement qui la déclarent « mentalement déficiente, avec des délires de capacité intellectuelle. »
Ada avait fait des études supérieures.
Elle avait enseigné pendant six ans.
Elle lisait le latin et le grec.
L’asile appelait cela de la folie.
Son mari appelait cela une honte.
La société appelait cela un crime.
Ada passa quatre ans à prouver qu’elle était suffisamment saine pour s’échapper de l’endroit où elle avait été emprisonnée pour son intelligence.
Après sa fuite, elle arriva à New York, changea de nom pour Sarah Bennett et travailla comme commis, cachant son niveau d’instruction pour ne pas éveiller les soupçons. Elle ne reprit jamais contact avec sa famille — qui avait soutenu son internement. Elle ne se maria plus jamais — elle ne pouvait faire confiance aux hommes ayant le pouvoir légal sur sa liberté.
Elle vécut discrètement pendant trente-huit ans. Elle mourut en 1935, à soixante-douze ans, après avoir passé près de quatre décennies à dissimuler l’intelligence qui avait failli détruire sa vie.
Ada avait été internée pour avoir lu.
Elle passa le reste de sa vie à faire semblant de mal savoir.
C’était survivre dans un monde qui appelait folles les femmes instruites.
Après sa mort, la propriétaire de l’immeuble trouva la chambre d’Ada remplie de livres — des centaines de volumes cachés derrière un mur factice. Ada n’avait jamais cessé de lire, malgré le risque. Elle n’avait jamais cessé d’apprendre, malgré la punition. Elle n’avait jamais cessé de penser, malgré le danger que cela représentait pour une femme de son époque.
Un journal détaillant les huit tentatives de fuite fut également retrouvé, avec des notes minutieuses sur la sécurité de l’asile, les tours de garde et les mécanismes des serrures.
Ada avait été assez brillante pour s’échapper d’un asile qui emprisonnait les femmes brillantes.
Aujourd’hui, ses documents d’internement sont conservés dans un musée d’histoire des femmes, avec la description suivante :
« Ada Morrison a été internée pour avoir trop lu.
Elle s’est échappée de l’asile huit fois avant d’y parvenir.
Elle a passé 38 ans à cacher une intelligence qu’aucune prison n’a pu contenir.
Elle fut considérée folle pour être intelligente.
Le monde était fou de qualifier cela de maladie. »

My male coworker complained that my bra straps were showing, he called it “distracting” and said the male equivalent would be a woman seeing a man walking around with his penis out. I just looked at him and asked if he genuinely understood what a bra is. A bra is underwear. Genitals are not. The actual equivalent would be a guy wearing his pants low enough that his boxers are showing….which plenty of men do without anyone acting like it’s obscene. The fact that some men can’t tell the difference between underwear and genitalia says everything. And somehow, they’re still trusted to legislate women’s reproductive rights.

🎣 FREE FISHING IN MARYLAND

On July 4, unlicensed anglers are free to fish anywhere in the state without a fishing license – so feel free to take someone fishing. Go fish!

License-free fishing is for all state residents and visitors. This event provides anglers a unique opportunity to explore the state’s diverse fishing without needing a fishing license, trout stamp, or registration.

The department hosts license-free fishing every year on the Independence Day holiday to take advantage of peak summer fishing. Any individual may catch and possess finfish for recreational purposes in any tidal and nontidal waters of Maryland. All anglers must follow all current regulations, including size and catch limits found in the department’s fishing and crabbing guide.
This year the department is encouraging anglers to catch invasive species such as Chesapeake channa (snakeheads) and blue catfish, which are affecting the overall Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Aside from the free fishing day, and certain license-free areas, anyone 16 or older fishing in Maryland must possess a license, which can be obtained or renewed online, through the department’s mobile app, or in person at a department service center, a participating retail sports license agent in the state, or by calling 866-344-8889 during normal business hours.

These findings indicate that consciousness may not be limited to organisms with brains, but could be a more flexible property emerging in diverse life forms. As trees migrate northward in response to climate change, mirroring animal migration, researchers argue that our understanding of “mind” must expand beyond traditional boundaries.

With over three trillion trees on Earth, acknowledging plant consciousness could transform our ethical frameworks, agricultural practices, and relationship with nature, shifting from viewing plants as mere resources to recognizing them as active, aware participants in our shared ecosystem.

As we mark the 100th anniversary of the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh stories, The Queen has presented a very special gift to the New York Public Library, reuniting baby Roo with his friends from the 100 Acre Wood.

The Library is home to the original collection of toys owned by Christopher Robin Milne, son of A.A. Milne, which inspired the characters in the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh series. The collection is missing Roo, the baby kangaroo who was lost in an orchard in the 1930s.

The new addition of Roo was created by Shropshire-based company Merrythought, who also created the original toys.
