Massachusetts homeowners on Plum Island just got a town letter warning that flying American flags on their own property for July 4th could "harass" endangered shorebirds and violate Endangered Species Acts. The notice from Newbury explicitly lists "flags" alongside mylar streamers and reflective materials as devices that might deter protected birds from beaches and dunes. It threatens "significant regulatory and financial penalties" for disrupting feeding, nesting, or migratory behavior.

Residents are furious. "Are you serious? I can't fly American flags to celebrate America 250 on my own land?" said Marc Sarkady, who's lived there 30+ years. The island already has miles of open preserve beach for the birds.
