More than 20 major players—including NVIDIA, Meta, Mozilla, Replit, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), and others—have officially spoken out through the American Innovators Network.

They have one clear goal: Protect Open Weights.

Their warning is direct: if the government imposes excessive restrictions on open-weight AI models, the entire startup ecosystem will suffer.

The reality is that almost no startup can afford to spend hundreds of millions of dollars training a frontier model from scratch. Without open-weight models that developers can download, fine-tune, and build upon, many AI startups simply won’t survive.

One line from their letter is especially striking:

“In fact, openness may be one of the most important paths to AI safety and security.”

If the future relies only on closed models, we’ll end up creating single points of failure while handing control of AI to a small number of dominant companies. In contrast, open communities can examine models, identify vulnerabilities, develop safeguards, and improve them over time—making AI systems more transparent, resilient, and secure.

This is no longer just about writing code.

It’s a battle over technological sovereignty.
