Just in: #March 2020 was 2nd warmest March on record for the globe. It's the 44th March & 423rd consecutive month w/ warmer-than-avg temperatures, per @NOAANCEIclimate https://t.co/FuWUkSdPjC #StateOfClimate
Chainsaws began to hum around 9:30pm, just as some of the passengers of the two dozen waiting vehicles were throwing a dance party to keep warm on the chilly 40 degree Maui mountainside.
The exodus was thwarted when a truck got stuck in the soft forest floor. Attempts to push and pull it free were in vain. It will remain there until a tow truck can pull it out.
A good samaritan with 4x4 experience guided vehicles through the bush around the roots of the felled tree to circumvemt the obstacle. The Elantra driver wasn’t worried because “it’s a rental.” “Full coverage!” he said.
At 7pm a massive eucalyptus fell across Haleakala Highway blocking traffic descending from Haleakala Crater. We were the first vehicle to encounter it as we descended from the 10,000’ volcano.
Deep considerations I have around moving to Maui are so well addressed in this piece.

-At statehood (1959) Hawaiians were the majority, 60 years later they make up less than 10%.
-Maui’s population is somewhere over 150k. She receives 2.5mill visitors/year.

Listening to John D. Sutter talk about #Baseline2020 - a multi-decade documentary on the longterm effects of climate change, and my intro to “slow journalism” that allows more thoughtful examination of big events happening over time. Has he talked @longnow yet?
Jurassic plant sighting!

Back at Makena whale spotting. And hoping a spot opens for me at Tuesday’s talk on why sighting numbers have been declining, hosted by Maui Nui Marine Resource Council. Curious how our count numbers last Saturday fall in the stats.
