@Cristin37107433@brivael True, and it's my favorite example. The lasting gains came from ideas like the Declaration of the Rights of Man. The tribunals gave us the Terror, then Robespierre on the same scaffold, then Napoleon. The renaissance happened despite the trials, not because of them.
@brivael I'm not defending Brussels or Macron. Plenty to criticize. But I am saying "trials for opponents" and "America will save us" are weak foundations for a renaissance. Make the case for building without those lame ideas and more people will listen.
@brivael Strange sovereignty argument. France has to reclaim its independence, and the reason for hope is that Washington and Elon will make sure it does
@kevinnbass Mass layoffs? "See, they were fake jobs." No layoffs? "See, adult daycare." An argument that explains every possible outcome explains nothing.
@kevinnbass That's a charity, and no CFO under margin pressure is running one. The first bad quarter, the "extremely fake" roles are the first line on the cut list. That's the whole history of automation.
Total Wealth of Bottom 50% of U.S. households
1989: $317.8 billion
2026: $313 billion
Total Wealth of Top 0.00001% (20 households)
1989: $88.6 billion
2026: $4 trillion
This is insane!
We need a wealth tax on billionaires NOW!
@mangus_the@lordbuckly oh for sure. I'm just pointing out that there is a much more obvious cause of the cancellation than some weird, far-flung tinfoil conspiracy that this post is pushing.
@Acyn it's easy to promise abundance when your own security is never on the line. He isn't the one who has to bridge the gap between "jobs will change" and whatever comes next.
@lordbuckly This is like saying my coffee maker broke because the Cowboys lost on Sunday.
There's no evidence USAID ever funded The Late Show, which is supported by advertising. USAID's budget went to foreign aid programs, not American late-night.
@boneGPT I'm with you on the doom fatigue. Every new tech is pitched as the end of the world & historical perspective is good. But the golden era you describe was built by cautious people. Being grateful for how far we've come is a good reason to keep doing the things that got us here
