@TheOakLeafs The risk is what do we do with the 2 years remaining on Auston Matthews contract. That's the only risk that matters. If we sign a goalie to a long-term deal that doesn't work out after year 3...so what...we get saves and a chance to win...now. I'm not sure Murray is that guy.

If Matt Murray was a pending UFA, would he get offered anywhere near the $4.7M over 2 years that Toronto just acquired?

If the answer to that is no (and it VERY likely is), then Toronto did a terrible job of only getting a 3rd and 7th packaged with him, even despite his upside.

@KPapetti Matthews is signed for 2 years. I would argue that short-term risk is worse than long-term. The franchise literally depends on him re-signing. Just make saves, the rest can be sorted out in 2024-25/

@EditorinLeaf @ATFulemin The rhetoric is different, but the actually job they do is about as different as a goalie with .910 SV% and a goalie with .912 SV%...all other factors being equal. Politics in general is just kind of a joke right now. It's a vote for the lesser of two evils.

@johncalia They are nowhere near the same thing. The line is already there. Arrogance comes from insecurity, or from a false sense of reality, and confidence is neither.
Problem is, most people cannot recognize the difference, so it's a perception issue on the part of the observer.
