His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of Lord Briggs of Westbourne as the next President of the Supreme Court. The King made the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following the recommendation of an independent selection commission. Lord Briggs will take up his new role in January 2027, when the current President, Lord Reed, retires. Lord Briggs will be the Court's fifth President since it was established in 2009.
Speaking upon the announcement of his appointment, Lord Briggs said:
“It is a great privilege to be appointed President of the Supreme Court and to serve the public by upholding the rule of law. I look forward to working with colleagues across the Supreme Court and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) to deliver justice of the highest quality, transparency and accessibility.”
The current President, Lord Reed of Allermuir, welcomed Lord Briggs’ appointment:
"I am very pleased that Lord Briggs has been appointed to be the next President of the Supreme Court. He is a judge of the highest distinction, with previous experience of judicial leadership. He has also demonstrated his commitment to increasing the accessibility and efficiency of the Justice system, both in domestic cases and in those heard by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. I wish him well in his new role."
