My closing statement last night on the Tammi Mac Late Show on @foxsoultv
Bottom line: Decriminalization, expungements, resentencing YES! Legalization & commercialization NO! The predatory alcohol & Big Tobacco companies have poured billions into the industry & it will harm us.
Fair about the link to the study. I usually add and just did. Regarding the other perspectives on the data, I feel like my post fairly closely conveyed the tone of the abstract of the study. I think we are perhaps now at a matter of stylistic preference as opposed to blatant misleading content/information.
Had important conversations here at the #ALC54 with some doctors and health professionals about health inequities that the Black community experiences today. The important new study linking marijuana use to a 4X higher risk of type II diabetes has huge implications for our community that already faces a 1.5 higher risk for diabetes and 40% higher risk of death from it.
@melrod42 Out of curiosity, how would you state what I stated in a way that you feel accurately reflects the findings of the study? Is your issue with the study or how I referenced it?
This can be said of many studies to known health risks. In fact, the tobacco industry used this exact rationale for decades. It is difficult to "prove" with ironclad certainty many health outcomes but the data can solidly point or lean in a certain direction warranting wise caution before a public health calamity definitely proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Wanted to quickly share my thoughts on this very important study that came out this week connecting marijuana use to diabetes and particularly, how this could disproportionately impact African-American communities in a deadly way.

@melrod42 The primary reason people get MM approval is to facilitate ease of access to a wide variety of attractive, packaged, and enjoyable cannabis products. There are of course some who have genuine medical needs/use of it, but percentage wise, this is always a small minority.
Under PA "medical" marijuana law, 3 doctors issued over 11k certifications last year! It's a shame that in 2025, there are still politicians & corporations that are still pretending that the label "medical" is in any way appropriate for what's taking place with MM laws.
With this type of spectacular failure in alleged "regulation" of something as important as medicine, who can honestly say that the PA will do a good job "regulating" marijuana legalization and commercialization there as some legislators are now pushing to do?
@learnaboutsam
During recent state Senate budget hearings, Brown highlighted a handful of doctors who each approved at least 11,000 certifications in a year.
“If you break that down, it’s a crazy amount … per day, per minute that they would prescribe,” she said.

Let’s not kid ourselves @GovernorShapiro, marijuana is a highly potent drug today causing schizophrenia and other mental and physical illness. You can remove criminal penalties for low level possession without launching a massive commercial industry that targets kids.
Has it been legalized at the national level yet? Have big corporations like Altria, Molson Coors, and others been able to make advertisements, commercial campaigns etc like Juul yet? No. So my point remains. And there are still concerning trends with daily and heavy use even with the state by state legalization but I'm sure we would just go back and forth on that.
"If we legalize it, we can regulate it and keep it away from kids." I've heard this well intentioned, yet very faulty argument for marijuana legalization countless times. Here's my response in a recent discussion on @fox5ny with @LisaEvers

@learnaboutsam.
Florida should not regulate #marijuana like alcohol. The "regulation" of alcohol, tobacco, vaping & pharmaceuticals shows us that the business interests & predatory marketing practices of multi-billion 💵 addiction-for-profit businesses wins over public health.#VoteNoOn3
🎤🎶 Watch SAM’s Director of Community Engagement & Outreach, @WillVJones_SAM, drop some knowledge on how the marijuana industry is playing the same game as Big Alcohol and Tobacco—targeting our most vulnerable communities. 📢 It’s time to stand up for minority neighborhoods and say NO to these predatory practices! 🚫

@SILVERbackApe1 Lmao. Advocating for a specific position on public policy is PART OF EXERCISING FREE WILL AND DEMOCRACY. You're just as free to oppose as stance as I am free to support it or vice versa. This is fundamental 🤦🏽♂️
I've worked on this issue for years. You'll never find me once advocating or condoning anyone getting locked up for possession of a personal amount of marijuana. You're just making up s&#t. And your psychological prowess is breathtaking. You should work for the CIA. The only reason one can oppose legalization is because they're miserable. So true!
