𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙄𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨 – 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 AL BAHATHRI 🏆
With the Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas taking place today, we look back fondly on Al Bahathri, who carried the Shadwell silks to victory in the race in 1985.
Al Bahathri occupies a special place in Shadwell history, as her success at the Curragh provided Shadwell with its first-ever Classic winner when she defeated Vilikaia and Top Socialite. She was held in such high regard by the operation that the now famous Newmarket all-weather gallop was funded and named in her honour.
Purchased as a yearling for $650,000 at Keeneland July Sale, the American-bred daughter of Blushing Groom developed into one of Europe’s leading fillies under the care of Newmarket trainer Tom Jones.
As a two-year-old she captured the Princess Margaret Stakes and Lowther Stakes before progressing at three to add the aforementioned Irish 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes (pictured) and Child Stakes to her record. She also finished a close second to triple-crown winning Oh So Sharp in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Crowned Ireland’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, she retired having won six times from 12 starts, four at Group level.
Al Bahathri excelled on and off the racecourse. At stud, she produced multiple Stakes performers, headed by Haafhd, winner of the Group 1 2000 Guineas and Group 1 Champion Stakes, alongside Group 2 winner Munir and Listed winner Hasbah.
After retirement from breeding, Al Bahathri spent her later years at Derrinstown Stud with her long term Classic winning paddock friend Midway Lady. She passed away at the grand age of 32.
Do you have any memories of Al Bahathri? Let us know in the comments 🙌🔵⚪️

🔵⚪️ - Shadwell can confirm that #RAAHEEB will not run in the Betfred Derby on 6th June and will instead be readied for important targets later in the summer.
🗣️ Angus Gold, Shadwell Racing Manager, “I have had a long discussion with Owen Burrows regarding Raaheeb’s participation in the Derby after his impressive victory at Sandown last week.”
“Owen said that the horse had been stiff for a couple of days following the race, but whilst routine x-rays have revealed nothing untoward, he will have to give the horse a bit more time to get over the race before he goes back into full training. Consequently, Owen feels he will not be able to have him in peak condition for the Derby; therefore, sadly, the decision has been made to bypass Epsom and give Raaheeb the time he needs, and we hope to have him ready for important targets later this summer.”

We were delighted to welcome former jockey Paul Cook to Beech House Stud as he celebrated this special milestone 🎉
Paul holds a significant place in Shadwell’s history, having ridden the first winner in what would become our iconic blue and white silks. He partnered the Tom Jones-trained MUSHREF to victory at Redcar on 30th July 1980 - a landmark moment that helped begin the journey of Shadwell as we know it today 🙌

Racing Manager Angus Gold confirmed in the latest edition of ‘Past, Present & Future’ that Touleen, twice a winner last season in the care of @OwenBurrowsRace, will be given an entry in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury next weekend, ahead of a potential tilt at the Betfred 1000 Guineas.
“The plan is for Touleen to go to Newbury, for the Fred Darling, the Dubai Duty Free, and if all goes well there we would like to run her in the 1000 Guineas. She seems in very good form and has been working well for the past two to three weeks.“
“Newbury is the obvious place to start her off. It’s just down the road and we don’t particularly want to go to Newmarket just two weeks before the big race, so we’ll go there and see how she gets on.”
“She won well twice last year and then obviously disappointed at Newmarket in the Rockfel but she scoped dirty after that race, she was full of mucus, so I think there was a genuine excuse for that defeat.”
“I guess the only question is will she definitely stay a mile. It’s interesting that her dam, Talaayeb, who was by Dansili and we all thought would stay a mile and quarter, ran in the Guineas first time up and was a close-up fourth (to Winter), but we ended up bringing her back to seven furlongs and she won the City of York Stakes. There is a bit of speed in this particular branch of the family, so as long as she settles and does everything right, which she does at home, I think there’s every chance she will get a mile.”
“With Jim (Crowley) still out injured, the plan is that Saffie Osborne will ride Touleen. Saffie has ridden her in her last couple of bits of work, and subject to confirming with everybody, that will be the case next Saturday.”
