If you’re thinking about taking on a media or social role at a non-league football club, the first thing I’d say is this: it’s never “just a bit of tweeting”. 🫣

It becomes part of your life quicker than you expect. When I started at New Milton Town, I expected to be posting updates, designing a few graphics, maybe writing the odd bit of copy.

What I didn’t realise was how quickly the role grows arms and legs — and how deeply you end up embedded in the day-to-day running of the club.

You become the club’s voice, but also its record keeper. I wasn’t just posting line-ups; I was writing every match report, tracking player statistics, updating the website every few days with news stories, and making sure the season actually had a narrative when someone looked back on it. Results fade quickly. The written record doesn’t.

One thing I’d tell anyone starting out is to be ready for the workload to creep up on you. It’s not one big task — it’s lots of small ones.

Designing and editing the matchday programme late in the week. Updating the website after a Tuesday night game. Keeping stats up to date so they’re right at the end of the season, not guessed at. None of it feels huge on its own, but together it takes time, care, and consistency.

You also end up involved in things you never expected. At one point I found myself sorting out bits of ground grading — things as small as making sure the ‘home’ sign was actually up on the dugout. It sounds minor, but that’s non-league football. Everyone mucks in, and if you notice something needs doing, chances are it becomes your job.

Another thing I’d say is: respect the level you’re working at. Non-league football doesn’t need polishing until it looks like something it isn’t.

The value is in getting the details right — telling the story properly, giving players and staff the recognition they deserve, and treating the club with care. Writing honest match reports, not just recycling clichés. Making the programme something people actually want to read. Keeping the website alive, not forgotten.

You’ll also feel the responsibility more than you expect. When you’re the one writing the reports and updating the records, wins feel better and defeats linger longer. You’re not just watching games anymore — you’re processing them, framing them, and archiving them. At some point, you stop feeling like “the media person” and start feeling like part of the club’s fabric.

I’d also say this: don’t chase perfection. You’ll always spot things you’d tweak with more time. A line you’d rewrite. A design you’d refine. That’s part of caring. Just don’t let it drain the enjoyment out of it.

Most importantly, enjoy it while you’re in it. Take note of what you’re building. A season’s worth of reports, programmes, stats and stories adds up to something meaningful — even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time.

A year in a non-league media role will stretch you more than you expect. It’ll test your organisation, your creativity, and your patience.

But if you do it properly, you don’t just leave with content — you leave knowing you helped document a club’s history, however small it might seem.

And that’s something worth being proud of.
