Of course, there will always be people who can’t work. However, for so many who have suffered or suffer with their mental health, work, purpose and opportunity can be a hugely important part of rebuilding their lives and moving forward.

Yet Cllr Richard Davies, Leader of the Lincolnshire Conservative Group, says:

“No employer, unless they too were mad, would see that as a good investment.”

What makes this even more concerning is that he represents the very political establishment that has overseen years of, austerity, financial poverty, lack of incentive, the development of a Nanny State, a population explosion due to out of control immigration, fewer opportunities, public services bursting at the seams and, consequently, a rise in mental health conditions and lack of support.

His party says it wants to cut welfare, boost the economy and get Britain working. Yet, with an awful attitude like this, they’ve got no chance of achieving it.

I was making an incredibly important speech today at full council about our most vulnerable children. Yet, regardless of political party, not one of them would allow me to speak and, perhaps more importantly, not one of them were willing to listen.

This is not new.

For far too long, politicians have failed to listen. And for years, the very parties THEY represent have failed our nation and, most tragically of all, failed and continue to fail our children.

One of the most prominent and disturbing examples is the rape gangs scandal. A deeply shameful chapter in our nation’s history. And what did politicians across the political establishment do while vulnerable children were being abused, raped and tortured? They looked the other way, failed to act, and failed to give these children the safety and the voice they so desperately needed.

This cannot continue.

Our children deserve politicians who will listen. Our communities deserve representatives who will put people before politics. And future generations deserve leaders who are prepared to confront difficult truths, stand up for the vulnerable, and put the long-term interests of our country ahead of their own political careers.

Too often, what we see instead is a self-serving establishment more concerned with protecting itself than protecting the people it was elected to serve.

Andy Burnham increasingly looks like Labour’s “trophy wife” — swanning around without a suit or tie and presenting himself as a future statesman. I wonder if he’ll be quite so casual at the White House.

Before dreaming of the world stage, perhaps he should focus on Britain’s near £3 trillion national debt. You cannot treat taxpayers as an endless source of money.

Why work extra hours, chase a promotion or save to buy your own home if you are continually penalised for doing so?

Britain should reward hard work, ambition and saving — not punish the people creating wealth to fund an ever-growing state.

That’s the problem with socialism: eventually, you run out of other people’s money.
