@Noahpinion@noahpinion How do you know this will be the continuing paradigm? The only certainty is uncertainty with an object whose methods are more sophisticated than our ability to comprehend them?
@clairlemon@JeffLadish And it still could mean many many deaths, or even an unliveable plannet, risks aren't diminishing, they're just adding cumulatively.
Some additional reflections on visiting Ceuta in July-August on my Substack, or the cognitive dissonance of being a journalist: https://t.co/ylu6d2kXXp
Having risked their lives to swim around the frontera in the hope of a better life in Europe, most of the Moroccans still in Ceuta seemed crestfallen. Since Spain joined the Schengen Convention in 1991, Ceuta and Melilla have been treated as administratively separate entities. It is impossible to travel to Spain proper without further passport checks – and so while those who crossed to Ceuta were technically in Spain, they were no closer to Europe than when in Morocco.
Some of those who were yet to return hadn’t quite accepted this reality: they were desperately hoping they could still find a way. Aziz, an Afghan national, who looked to be in his forties, had been travelling for over a month to get to Ceuta. He told me he had been “fleeing from the government”. He said he had flown to Libya, and then had trekked across, first to Algeria, then Morocco. Although claiming asylum looked difficult, he was adamant: “I am not going back to Morocco.” Most of the remaining new entries were left either milling around Ceuta or headed for CETI, the temporary migrant processing facility in the hills above the city, in the hope that they might successfully claim for asylum.

What's the point of a pseudonymous blog when you promote it under your own name and photos of you are very much in the post itself? I don't know. But anyway, here is my latest blog about visiting China: https://t.co/bCNolbxCan
Why are African governments building higher? At a time of high debt, tight budgets and dwindling foreign-aid payments, economic motives are doubtful https://t.co/SI4p4aQTXs
@RoryStewartUK@RestIsPolitics They've been doing this in Africa for a good while. Setting up hybridised networks of disinformation that include hiring influencers, setting up things that look like official news networks (Africa Initiative in Burkina for example) as well as bots.
