Rothko and Scott first met through gallerist Martha Jackson in New York in 1953 and kept in contact through letters, sharing personal moments from their lives, as well as details on their artistic endeavors and topics then weighing on their minds.

The earliest piece in our current show is this special 1946 Rothko, entitled Personage. The exhibition highlights the dialogue between Mark Rothko and William Scott over a number of years as the two corresponded through letters and visits.

Abstract forms or everyday objects? 🍊
Still life was central to William Scott's art. At first glance, this work is an abstract composition, but it is rooted in real objects arranged on a tabletop, that Scott painted often.
See it in our 20th Century British Art display 🎟️
Thank you to all who came out last night for our discussion with Kate Rothko Prizel, Christopher Rothko, and James Scott, moderated by Anita Rogers. What a great night! Thank you to our guests for their attention and thoughtful engagement.
