🌹🇨🇦🇨🇳🌹 Recent reports that the first Chinese-made EVs have begun arriving in Canada have reignited concerns about cybersecurity, data privacy, and economic competition. These concerns deserve serious attention.
During my recent visit to Denmark and Norway, I had the opportunity to see firsthand the growing presence of Chinese EVs on Nordic roads and in local showrooms. What struck me was the pragmatic approach taken by these middle powers. Rather than framing the issue as a choice between security and openness, they have pursued both through smart regulation, strong cybersecurity standards, and robust consumer protection while continuing to encourage competition, innovation, and consumer choice.
Cybersecurity is a legitimate concern for all connected vehicles, regardless of where they are manufactured. The Nordic experience demonstrates that security and openness are not mutually exclusive. Through clear rules and effective oversight, governments can manage risks while ensuring consumers benefit from affordability, technological progress, and greater choice.
The lesson is simple: manage risks prudently, but do not allow fear to stand in the way of innovation, competition, affordability, and opportunities that benefit Canadian consumers.

Today, I welcomed Minister Wang Yi to Canada. The Minister’s visit was the first visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister in over ten years, and an important step in our bilateral relationship.
We agreed that Canada will be a country of honour at the China International Import Expo, and committed to meet at least annually as foreign ministers to work closely to resolve sensitive issues.
We also agreed collaborate in key industries like agriculture, clean tech, energy and manufacturing, and re-open a dialogue on national security concerns. I also announced a Canadian creative industries trade mission to China in the Fall.
Communication between our governments is vital, which is why Minister Wang Yi and I agreed to meet again at the ASEAN summit in July.
🌹🇨🇦🇨🇳🌹 Ten years ago, I welcomed China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Canada’s Parliament.
Yesterday, I was delighted to reconnect with the longtime friend.
A decade has brought many changes. What remains unchanged is our friendship, and the friendship between the peoples of Canada and China.
The strongest bridges are not made of steel, but of trust, understanding, and enduring friendship—values to which I remain committed, and always will.

Canada and China are building a more stable and constructive partnership.
Building on the progress made during my visit to China earlier this year, Minister Wang Yi and I focused on creating new opportunities and greater prosperity on both sides of the Pacific.
