@WeWatchedAMovie Event Horizon is the only horror movie that scared me to literal tears. I was like one of the fainting hippies in those old Exorcist news stories.
@WeWatchedAMovie The EW post is so clickbaity because it’s basically Cruise, Barrymore, Cage, Kurt Russell & Warwick Davis praising the shit out of him and two directors who say he was a pain in the ass once.
@JosephKahn This take is what happens when straight men are disproportionately framed as “bad” in movies and starved of empathy on social media for a decade.
They cling to Bear in Act 1 like an empathy cheeseburger and rationalize the rest regardless of the filmmaker’s stated intentions
@FreddyInSpace@KarelHering It might’ve worked if the AI fakes had been de-aged versions of the killers looking as they did when Sidney killed them - wounds and all and THEN dropped that post-credit scene.
I’m glad you made this video.
I think there’s an empathy bias toward straight men.
I also think the disproportionate 2010-2020s run of “straight men are bad” tropes in movies have only compounded that bias.
In some ways it reminds me of the 80s/90s run of “gay men are bad” tropes that shaped the way I see myself today. It’s real and it sucks.
I’d argue that Obsession is one of the few films that merit grounded debates about gender roles and power dynamics despite its supernatural premise - because that’s how Barker approached it.
It just arrived at a time when many men are empathy-starved, in part because the films that didn’t merit those debates have poisoned the well.
Bear in Act 1 is a fucking empathy cheeseburger and a lot of guys are understandably gonna cling to that no matter what.
I know you’re not saying my take on that scene is ‘wrong,’ cuz we agree all subjective opinions are valid. But if you were, I’d just say as a friend that based on Barker's interviews he seems to think that's closer to the movie he made than not - and that real world logic applies 🤷♂️
"I never wanted this movie to feel too much like a demon movie. I wanted it to lean into, yes, magic is real in this world, fine, we accept that, but then forget about that.” https://t.co/UYbcBRhJop
"The thing that Bear wishes for is cursed. Like, taking away someone’s autonomy, someone’s self, that’s cursed. A note that we were getting was that Bear's character was very frustrating because it felt like he wasn't doing enough to fix it, and I was like, “Okay, hold on a second. Why don't we do a better job of showing why he doesn't want to fix it right away?” https://t.co/VkemnFPCEX
"Everyone thinks the One Wish Willow is cursed, but it's not. If you're forcing someone to feel a certain way about you, it doesn't really matter how you word it."
"The moment you're supposed to realize Bear 100% knows what's going on is at the restaurant when he asks her point blank, 'You love me more than anyone in the world?', which was the exact wording of his wish," Barker says, referencing a scene that takes place not long after Nikki's abrupt change of heart. "Then when Nikki says, 'Why does it matter?' He says, 'It doesn't matter to me.' And it's confirmed."

Freedom 250 was created by Trump and is run by the Administration and Trump donors. It’s its own private entity established outside the Congressional framework and outside the bipartisan America 250 committee established by Congress in 2016. It’s a partisan arm of the Admin. Events on the National Mall would’ve happened regardless. This is about partisan control of its own thing.
@SunshineDaisy I can almost guarantee a rally was always part of the plan. That’s why he created Freedom 250 to undermine & steal from the bipartisan America 250 committee established in 2016.
This is a classic “I broke it on purpose so you’d thank me for fixing it” situation.”
