Del Somerville. English. Father of two. Locked out of his own marina where he lives. Throws an empty plastic bottle and swears at a police line at a protest about migrants. Two years. Crown Court. Judge calls him a thug and says the point of the sentence is to stop anyone else standing there when the next boat comes in.

Hadush Kebatu. Off a small boat. Eight days in the country. Sexually assaults a 14-year-old in her school uniform. Tries it on a woman who intervenes. Tells the girls he wants a baby with them. Twelve months. Magistrates’ maximum. Then they talk about deporting him after.
One offence is a bottle in a crowd. The other is a child.

The Englishman gets the longer stretch. The man who put his hands on a schoolgirl gets half of it, that’s the sick state of our country RIGHT NOW!

That is not “different facts, different courts.” That is the state telling you which crime it actually fears. Disorder from people who live here. Not the assault that started the protests in the first place.

If you throw plastic at police while angry about boats, you are a deterrent case. If you assault a 14-year-old after arriving on one, the system finds the lowest available box and ticks it.

Call it what it is. Two-tier and NOT justice and it’s a bloody disgrace.
