A reminder that this year the Catholic Bishop of Fresno openly partook in an invalid Anglican consecration of a bishop. And STILL no penalties have been imposed, no excommunications announced, no nothing.
But he is not considered a schismatic, because reasons
In his Summa Theologiae, St Thomas Aquinas laid out one of the most charitable yet practical arguments concerning immigration that effectively shaped the West for almost 1,000 years.
1. Immigration must always be proportionate so that foreigners can properly assimilate into the culture and mode of worship of the state.
2. Citizenship â and associated rights â should only ever be granted after the third generation to preserve the culture, mode of worship, and constitution of the state.
3. The common good of the citizens must remain the highest priority of the state, meaning, the state's obligation to provide aid to its neighbours can never be at the expense of the citizens.
However, Aquinas ends with the sobering reminder that some peoples and states are incompatible with one another, and these must be held as "foes in perpetuity".
I think one of the main reasons why some Catholics are shocked by the SSPX excommunications is because in our current day, ecclesial punishment seems to go only one way. Yes, the consecrations against papal approval were a schismatic act, and the punishment is deserved.
But this upcoming Sunday, you could essentially attend a âPride Massâ (like this one pictured below, from last Sunday) and not face any penalties. You can advocate for womenâs ordination, publicly dissent from Catholic teaching on contraception (see Fordham Universityâs president), or be a pro-abortion politician (Biden)âand you remain in âfull communionâ.
Iâll leave it to the canon lawyers to figure out legal minutiae. But the fact is, on the ground, faithful Catholics see a ridiculous double standard. You can âblessâ a same-sex partnership during Mass (pictured below, at Londonâs Holy Apostles Church), and remain a priest in good standing. You can doubt the existence of Satan (see the Superior General of the Jesuits), and publicly dissent against revealed truths, and still not be excommunicated.
This isnât âwhataboutismâ. This is an attempt to examine the basic principles by which the Church condemns dissent and rebellion. If those principles arenât applied evenly and consistently, donât expect the Catholic faithful to trust the Churchâs leadership on crime and punishment.
âObedience is a virtue intended to direct us toward good, not toward evil. To pretend not to see evil in order not to appear disobedient, is a betrayal of truth and a betrayal of our own selves.â
~Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre
For all those who say that the reason the Vatican is harsh with the SSPX but not with Protestants is that the Protestants were raised in their heresy, here's some news: The new bishop Marc Hanappiuer was born into an SSPX family in 1990.
@NuncaBob@FrDaveNix Yeah historically Owensboro has had the largest Catholic population. When we come home to visit family we go the fathers of mercy or Immaculate Conception for the TLM. If a parish is not on https://t.co/yUESgElwan or https://t.co/U4VUv6oQiv we donât go to it.
@NuncaBob@FrDaveNix Iâve only been to handful in the diocese so some may be healthier than others. I grew up in the area and have since moved away. Only go back to visit family. But the ones Iâve been to have little youth and in 10yrs once the boomers age out I donât see them staying open.
@FrDaveNix Itâs a small community. The Owensboro diocese is not the healthiest. Most priest cover more than one parish. I believe fr Kennedy covers down on 3. The TLM parish is the only one that has families with children. From speaking with him it has the largest attendance.
@FrDaveNix Fr., I struggle almost daily with whatâs going on, I donât understand why these bishops allow anything but Catholicism? And then everyone else tryâs to gaslight me that everything is fine be obedient.
@Catholicizm1 Please keep Fr. Kennedy in your prayers. He has been a steadfast shepherd to the TLM community and the many families who have relied on his ministry over the years. His dedication and sacrifice have meant a great deal to those attached to the traditional liturgy.
@Catholicizm1 high altar from the 1860s and faithfully endured the liturgical upheavals of the 1970s. Please keep Fr. Kennedy in your prayers. He has been a steadfast shepherd to the TLM community and the many families who have relied on his ministry over the years.
@Catholicizm1 This is the parish in western Kentucky where the Traditional Latin Mass is being discontinued. It is the only parish in the region that offered the TLM. I recently visited while back home with family, and seeing it was especially meaningful. The church still retains its original
