Dead wrong.
This isn’t “gatekeeping” or “missing Lucas’s point.” It’s calling out the straight-up betrayal and character assassination of heroes who’ve been canon for literal decades.
Luke Skywalker, the guy who stared down the Emperor, believed there was still good in Vader when literally everyone told him he was crazy, and rebuilt hope in a galaxy that had none, didn’t just “explore failure.” He got turned into a depressed, robe-wearing hermit who ran away, contemplated straight-up murdering his sleeping nephew over a bad thoughts, and decided the Jedi Order he fought and bled for needed to die with him (the same Jedi Order which had been the guardians of peace in the galaxy for over 1,000 GENERATIONS). That’s not challenging the hero. That’s undoing him. That’s taking the paragon symbol of redemption, hope, faith, and endurance… and making him quit harder than anyone in the saga ever has.
ESB didn’t do this. In ESB, Luke fails repeatedly, loses a hand, learns a brutal truth, but he grows. He picks himself up and comes back stronger for his failure. He stays true to who he is. TLJ took that same character after 30+ years of consistent storytelling (OT + everything that followed) and said “actually, nah, he’s a quitter and a loser now.” That’s not deep or profound. It’s lazy, cheap, disrespectful writing that treats decades-worth of lore like it’s disposable for a hot take.
And the lore inconsistencies? Come on. The Force projection that magically drains him to death across the galaxy when we’ve seen Jedi do insane stuff for decades without it killing them. To my knowledge, no one had ever “forced themself to death” prior to this. The prosthetic hand that should’ve clanked to the floor when his projection vanished (you know, the one he lost in ESB and kept for the rest of his life). The casual dismissal of every mystery TFA set up because “none of that matters, Rey’s a nobody and Luke’s a failure.” It’s not “daring.” It’s contempt and spite for the audience that grew up with these characters, as well as for the characters themselves (love how they completely undid Han’s entire character progression to revert him to a smuggler, but now he’s also a deadbeat dad and loser husband who abandoned his family).
Lucas spent decades showing us that failure is part of the journey but the light side is balance, the Jedi protect peace and are worth preserving, and hope wins. TLJ threw all of that out for cheap shock value and “subversion of expectations.” Movies for kids can absolutely be for adults, but they don’t have to torch the soul of the saga to prove a point which the saga has already made.
I’ll keep loving the real Star Wars, the one where Luke Skywalker earned his legend instead of having it spat on. You can have your “best since Empire” take, but you hold that belief by rejecting what Luke Skywalker truly is: the symbol of undying, relentless hope in the face of insurmountable odds and evil. The rest of us will remember who these characters actually were for forty years before Rian decided to burn it all down for cheap shock value. The current state of Star Wars is directly attributable to The Last Jedi: the worst “Star Wars” movie ever “written”.
@TheEldritchGoth Don't think it's the 3 of you. I think a lot of people have turned. I did as soon as he started saying the sonic used to look like a gun (???) And when he changed Davros altogether cos, obviously anyone seeing a disabled person automatically thinks they're evil? He's a twat
@Ryan_LTFC No, why would I want a team that I hate pretty much all the time to do well? Idgaf if they're from the same country. You reckon Dortmund fans are routing for Bayern in a CL final? Fuck off
@piersmorgan Serial loser? So where was Rice when United came to the Emirates and beat you? And where was he in the cup final where City twatted you? Fuck off Piers, sincerely, everyone
@Mschatnoir Homelanders ending was perfect for the character, the only issue is the build up & execution got it totally wrong. Really needed one scene of him just losing it and killing 1000s just cos. Him getting V1 made no difference. But it did feel right for him to be pathetic at the end
@mufcytp I don't blame him for not mentioning Ruben cos he froze him out totally, unjustified in my opinion. But whilst not everyone, a lot of United fans including myself backed him and have since day 1. That's tough to read from him ngl. When things got tough, we wanted him to flourish
@Nerdaholics1 Starting 11 is OK, midfield (outside of Henderson) is brilliant, Kane is best no. 9 in the world for me, Wingers are decent, Pickford great for England. Defence is crap. And no massive game changers. I'd have MGW and Palmer in there, even a Welbeck. Not got high hopes
Some choices here are beyond horrific. Stones, Qunasah, Spence, Burn and Jordan fucking Henderson shouldn't be on the plane. That defence is absolutely shocking, yet Lewis Hall, Maguire and Shaw are at home. Unbelievable.
Wingy Media as it was known, is 99% certain to be no more. I simply do not have the same interest in Who anymore. I must admit, I was forcing myself towards the end cos I felt I had to make content. I do want to do it again but, I don't know what though
@stid123863@StretfordPaddck You replied about a specific thing. Specifically the thing with Bruno. Nothing else. And yes it was a foul. I'm not saying we're hard done by. I haven't disagreed with you. But, it's ok, I understand now that you're thick as pig shit and can't understand what I'm saying. Bye
@stid123863@StretfordPaddck Who's claiming victim!? I'm saying what I see. I haven't disagreed with the decisions against you. I even said you had the better chances. If that same exact challenge happened against you, you'd be whinging. Even more than you are now
@stid123863@StretfordPaddck When did I say you were or weren't the better team? You absolutely had the better chances. But that thing with Bruno, which is what we're talking about, isn't an accident. The ball was played and he twatted his face after. You're acting like he slipped his elbow which is bollocks
@stid123863@StretfordPaddck A lot of copium there. Just cos another thing to your team didn't go your way, doesn't mean that one with Bruno was correctly called either. Even as a United fan, I'll happily admit any decision, for or against us, that isn't right. Dont pull the pushes his shoulder and slip shit
