Richard Whiteley very sadly and prematurely died #OTD in 2005 at the age of only 61. His terrible jokes and even more terrible puns were a staple of Countdown back in the day. But he was occasionally brought almost to tears with laughter by jokes sent in by the fans at home π
@mjc0ughl4n I was very sad when i heard the day the lovely Richard Whitley passed away I was a big countdown supporter I loved Richard's smile and sense of humour Rip
I think snooker people the world over will know what I mean when I say I was gutted to be asked to go on BBC News this afternoon.
I hope I did a tiny bit of justice to one of snooker's most beloved characters, the irreplaceable John Virgo.
@pistol147 So sad to hear this morning Always enjoyed John's commentary and when he was a snooker player Condolences to his family and his snooker family Rip
You cannot imagine how excited I was a kid to watch John Virgo do his silly snooker impressions at the World Championships every year. I was into them more than the snooker.
Probably not a good look to cry while travelling on a train this morning. RIP JV
@Livesnooker So saddened to learn of the passing of John Virgo Loved listening to you John (Where is the cue ball going) You will be missed You were a great snooker player and commentator My condolence to John's family and all his snooker family Such sad news May his gentle soul rest in peace
