China is over 500 nautical miles away! One can’t just draw lines arbitrarily and claim those as their EEZ. I bet you cannot even tell us the exact coordinates that indicate China’s EEZs in the South China Sea. Moreover, the 2016 Arbitral Award, —final and legally binding per UNCLOS Part XV—unequivocally invalidated China’s expansive maritime claims in this region. That is the legal reality.

Second, the Philippine Coast Guard was lawfully conducting a search-and-rescue operation for a missing Filipino fisherman when it encountered and appropriately challenged the unlawful presence of a PLA Navy warship and a China Coast Guard vessel. The PCG was exercising its sovereign rights and jurisdiction—monitoring activity, asserting presence, and ensuring safety in waters that are indisputably under Philippine jurisdiction. The size of the vessel is irrelevant; jurisdiction, not tonnage, determines legality. Your attempt to portray this legitimate action as interference with “lawful navigation” is a deliberate reframing designed to legitimize intimidation.

Third, while you claim that Chinese vessels would assist a distressed fisherman “once discovered,” empirical experience demonstrates otherwise. Filipino fishermen have consistently reported harassment, obstruction, and dangerous maneuvers by Chinese vessels in these same waters. The incident at Escoda Shoal last month is only the most recent illustration of this troubling pattern.

The Philippine Coast Guard’s overriding priority has always been—and remains—the safety and rescue of the missing fisherman. Despite deteriorating weather and the unnecessary risks created by the presence of your vessels, PCG ships and aircraft continue their humanitarian mission. Calling attention to the illegal activities of Chinese vessels during this operation is not “theatrics”; it is transparency, and transparency is precisely what the Filipino people and the international community are entitled to.

Finally, allow me to raise a matter of professional conduct. Are you a career diplomat? Your public statements—combative, full of lies, and unnecessarily abrasive—depart sharply from the standards of diplomatic communication. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations underscores the importance of courtesy and restraint in preserving dialogue, even amid profound disagreement. Personal attacks, sarcasm, and undiplomatic rhetoric directed at myself, Senator Pangilinan, and the AFP spokesperson fall well outside the bounds of acceptable diplomatic discourse and do nothing to advance constructive engagement.
