When a watch became an identity vault and what comes next
A decade ago, together with Bulgari, we did something no luxury watchmaker had tried. We turned a fine mechanical watch into a hardware root of trust.
The Bulgari Diagono Magnesium carried a WISeKey secure element and a cryptographic key inside the watch. You tapped it to your smartphone to unlock the BVLGARI Vault, an encrypted personal data organizer backed by our secure storage in the Swiss Alps. The watch was still 100% luxury and 0% gadget. It was also a trusted digital identity on your wrist, with a roadmap toward payments, access control, and opening doors, cars and homes.

Here’s a more fluid version centered strongly on the paradox:

THE AI PARADOX: The people building the most powerful AI systems are increasingly warning us about the risks of the very technology they are racing to make more powerful.

This may be one of the defining paradoxes of our time.

The companies at the frontier of AI development are telling governments and society that increasingly capable models could be used for sophisticated cyberattacks, manipulation and attacks against critical infrastructure. AI leaders are taking these concerns directly to the United Nations and calling for stronger safeguards and international cooperation.

And yet, development continues to accelerate.

Why?

Because no company wants to slow down while its competitors continue. No country wants to pause while another gains technological advantage. And perhaps the greatest paradox of all: one of the proposed defenses against dangerous AI is to build even more powerful AI capable of detecting, supervising and stopping it.

We are therefore entering an extraordinary cycle:

We build more powerful AI → it creates new risks → we build even more powerful AI to defend against those risks → which creates the need for even stronger safeguards.

So the fundamental question is no longer whether AI development will continue. It will.

The question is whether trust, governance and human control can evolve as fast as AI itself.

This is at the heart of WISeKey’s HUMAN-AI-T initiative.

We believe AI supervising AI will become necessary—but it cannot become an endless chain of machines supervising machines.

At the top of that chain must remain a verifiable human Root of Trust.

AI systems and autonomous agents should have cryptographically verifiable identities. Their critical actions should be auditable. Supervisor AI should independently monitor more powerful models. Escalation and emergency mechanisms should remain available. And ultimately, accountability must lead back to humans and institutions—not disappear inside an algorithm.

The objective is not to stop AI.

It is to make sure that our capacity to trust, authenticate, supervise and control AI grows at least as quickly as AI’s capacity to act autonomously.

Perhaps that is the real technological race we should be focused on.

We are racing to make AI more powerful. We must now race just as hard to make it trustworthy.
