@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali Plus, It's not like unrest broke out near his home, and his choice was fight or flee. He armed himself, and traveled to the site of the unrest. I don't want to live in a country where individuals are permitted to kill others with no oversight, in the name of protecting things.
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali Why do you think you need to be allowed to kill people? Why is that the only way you can think of to protect something? I'm grateful our legal system does not support that bullshit.
@counselorcurtis@TheRichFromCali Also, at best you have a clash of vigilantes. Rittenhouse sure as hell looked like a bad guy with a gun, and his victims were attempting to restrain him for the police. Who has the right to take the law into their own hands?
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali Your personal opinion is not relevant. We as a culture, and legally speaking, life generally trumps property. Excepting stand your ground laws, which applies to your domicile, not your street, or city, you are expected to retreat from danger if at all possible.
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali I did watch the trial. It was a town he lives in, not his home. And traditionally we do not empower private citizens to use lethal force in defense of property.
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali It wasn't his home, so stand your ground can't reasonably be applied, and we otherwise don't legally consider property more important than life. So at best this was a citizens arrest gone horribly wrong. He is a murderer, DA just wanted a feather in their cap more than justice.
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali So then you have a teenager with a giant gun and no identifying insignia walking the streets during a riot. By the time anyone else pointed a gun at him he'd shot 2 people who didn't have guns. He was a vigilante, and he violated other people's constitutional rights.
@DavidGiglioCA@itsJeffTiedrich That is incorrect. A jury of his peers found that the state failed to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Rittenhouse went there with the intent of murdering people. That he Did murder people is not in dispute. Rittenhouse is a murderer.
@VT73556250@counselorcurtis@TheRichFromCali That is neither here nor there. The charge wasn't on the table for Rittenhouse. Do you not understand the charges that were brought, or the instructions the jury was given?
@counselorcurtis@TheRichFromCali But regardless, your initial assertion is ludicrous. All principals and rules have exceptions. Rejecting Rittenhouse's framing of events absolutely does not require that I oppose any legal self defense claim.
@counselorcurtis@TheRichFromCali If you use excessive force to defend yourself it's still manslaughter. There are people in jail for doing exactly what you just suggested. Rittenhouse is free right now cause of prosecutorial overreach.
@counselorcurtis@TheRichFromCali Absolutely not. You should not be allowed to choose to be a vigilante, go looking for a fight, then panic, overreact, & call it self defense. This was a textbook case of manslaughter, and the DA fucked it up by going for the splashy headline, rather than the reality of the case.
@UseCommonSenses @davidlbyrne @ingridkirschba3@TheRichFromCali Regardless of which video you watch he went looking for a fight, panicked, and killed people. If the DA had allowed the jury to convict of the lesser charge of manslaughter they probably could have gotten a conviction. His acquittal was the result of prosecutorial overreach.
@TheRichFromCali He killed people. He called it self defense, and his lawyer convinced a jury he shouldn't face legal consequences. "Not guilty" is not the same as "innocent", it just means the State failed to meet the burden of proof, and so cannot levy punishment.
@niccjagger@Nautilus134 You are conflating 'human' and 'person'. That implies that sentient, space fairing, entities wouldn't be people either. AI's will never be human, but experts in the field tell us that sentience is possible. You would deny an individual recognition of personhood based on biology?
@t_gelder44@johncardillo https://t.co/XtpH9kD3nL
Plus, BLM isn't a monolith. They don't have central leadership, organization, or even consistent goals. If things go poorly some place, it is not reasonable to blame them all. Just like you don't want to be blamed for the actions of other white people.
