The Temporary Protected Status of more than 330,000 immigrants lapsed at the end of July – about 200,000 were workers. Those workers were let go at the end of the month, which could show up as a drag on employment in August but rise in job postings. Some of those workers were let go early due to confusion over the timing of the change in the law. Another cliff will be crossed in October, when more Venezuelan workers will lose their TPS. Those losses will not show up in the initial unemployment claims, as they are not eligible for any benefits or assistance. Technically, they do not get counted among the unemployed either, as they no longer have the right to work in the US. That will add to pockets of labor shortages later this year, even as it initially suppresses job gains due to separations. Florida is home to the largest population of TPS workers and local shortages could become acute.
