No. England is a Christian country. Specifically, it’s a Protestant country.

England has a state religion, woven into our legal framework and deeply important to our culture. Our head of state is also head of our state church: the Church of England.

Christianity (both Catholic and Protestant) is so important to our ethnic story that it is fair to say that we are a Christian people.

But we also have a non-Christian past, which even influenced our Christian culture. If you disregard the pre-Christian history, then you fail to understand England.

It is incorrect to suggest that a state of being English, Welsh or Scottish relies on a state of being Christian. Indeed, there is a relationship between the two, but there are many pagan and atheist English people. All of whom have an infinitely greater claim to Englishlishness than a non-English Christian. Thus, religious adherence cannot inform Englishness. An Englishman remains English whether he is Christian, pagan or atheist.

There is only one qualification for being English, and there will only ever be one qualification for being English: Ancestry.
