There has been a fortress on this rock since at least the year 547.

It is older than England, older than Islam and older than the Vikings who would eventually destroy it...

This is Bamburgh, on the Northumberland coast, standing on volcanic rock 150 feet above the North Sea. The Britons had a stronghold here called Din Guarie, possibly the capital of the kingdom of Bernicia from around 420.

In 547 an Anglian warlord named Ida took it, and that is the moment Bamburgh enters written history. Around the year 600 his grandson Æthelfrith gave the fort to his wife, Bebba. It became Bebbanburh, Bebba's stronghold, and eventually Bamburgh. The castle is named after a woman almost nobody remembers...

It became the royal capital of Northumbria. Vikings destroyed it in 993. The Normans rebuilt it, and in 1464 the Earl of Warwick turned cannon on those walls and broke them, in what is usually described as the first time an English castle fell to artillery.

It sat as a ruin for the next two hundred years, until a bishop's fortune turned it into a charity, with a free school and an infirmary running inside the walls. In 1894 the armaments magnate William Armstrong bought the wreck for £60,000, spent over a million rebuilding it, died before the work was finished, and left it to his family, who own it still.

Nearly fifteen hundred years of kings, raiders and cannon fire, and people are still living in it...

A simple(ton's) guide to understanding climate change and wildfires:

Yes, the Biscarrosse wildfire was started by a van that caught fire. The flames spread to roadside vegetation before moving into the forest. That is a fact.

What isn't true is the claim that this means climate change had nothing to do with it.

Climate change didn't set the van on fire. It helped create the conditions that allowed a single vehicle fire to become a major wildfire.

France is suffocating under intense, recurring heatwave conditions. The Landes de Gascogne forest has been turned into a tinderbox, where a single ignition source was all it took for disaster to unfold. The flames spread rapidly, burning thousands of hectares and forcing thousands of people to flee.

The van was the spark. The heat and dry conditions were the fuel. Hotter, drier landscapes mean fires spread faster, burn harder and become far more destructive.

Stop staring at the match and start looking at why it was able to become such a disaster.

China Eastern flight, Lanzhou to Guiyang this morning. Plane had already landed and was taxiing when someone in front starts screaming “Fire!” and running. People look up... overhead bin is on fire.. Crew and passengers trying to deal with it, then the fire trucks show up on the ramp.
We keep seeing this exact scene. Power banks and lithium batteries in the overhead bins. They get crushed, shorted, or just decide to go thermal runaway. Happened on Air China last year too, and plenty of other flights. That’s why the rules exist: keep the power bank under the seat or in the seat pocket, switched off, and only bring the ones that meet the airline limits.

I’ve been on the ramp long enough to know how fast cabin smoke can turn into a real problem. Glad this one happened after landing and not at altitude, but “lucky” shouldn’t be the strategy.

Be careful with these things, guys. Or leave the big power banks at home if you’re not sure.
