📷 With the new ELF season starting this weekend do you know the true story of how Grandma Changed the Game of Football Fashion?📷
📷📷 As thousands of supporters flock through the turnstiles to support their team proudly donning the new replica shirt do they know the origin of this phenomenon.
Without generations of grandmothers knitting striped scarves, the modern culture of wearing football shirts might never have existed.
📷📷 FROM GRANDMA’S SCARF TO THE MODERN SHIRT
In the early days of football, terraces were cold and supporters relied on hand knitted scarves — usually made by Grandma — to stay warm. When clubs adopted official colours, those same grandmothers began knitting striped scarves in team colours, turning a simple winter accessory into the first true symbol of fan identity.
Clubs quickly realised something important: Fans loved wearing their colours.
That discovery paved the way for the first replica shirts in the 1960s, which grew into the bold, branded supporter shirts we see today.
From a ball of wool to a global industry — it all began with Grandma’s knitting needles.

James Van Der Beek’s final message to the world is one of the most powerful things I have ever heard. Stop whatever you are doing and listen to this! 🥺
🐘 The elephant in the #GameOfWool room? Speed knitting rarely sits on the pleasure spectrum. For many, it’s about relaxation, and the joy of making—stitch by stitch.
@TheAlexThurston 🧶 Knitting & crochet aren't just crafts—they're comfort, creativity, and community. Millions find joy, calm, and purpose in every stitch. If it’s not for you, that’s okay—but for many, it’s pure wellbeing. #GameOfWool
