@JDue51 Stunting vs a run play should be stomp time for the offense. Look how long those plays take before the runner plants their first foot to go upfield with the ball.
@WillBeStonks@Marshall23szn Respect to DG, he earned it, is an excellent analyst, and was a great player who never should have sat even half of a game, ever. Schematically, we see something different happening in this instance.
Sure. Klatt, and some numbers:
“In the last six quarters of football, last two against Penn State and then against Indiana, if you look at the yards that they gain running the football between the tackles, it’s 7.4 yards per carry.
“When you look at the runs outside of the tackles, on the perimeter, it’s 1.4 yards per carry outside the tackles.
“That is a glaring message of what do you do well and what do you do poorly. It’s right there. It’s right there.
“If you look at the season, yards per carry between the tackles, it’s about 5.7. Outside of the tackles, it’s about just over 3, 3.3, by the way.
“Those 3.3 yards outside of the tackles, on outside-of-the-tackles runs, that’s 136th out of 138 college football teams. It’s not working.
“They’ve run it outside, and this is where it really kind of rubber meets the road.
“You could tell me, like, well, Joel, they run it 80% of the time inside the tackles, but that’s not the case. That’s not the case.
“And if you told me that, I could say, like, OK, well, at least you’re trying to keep people honest. Maybe this is a schematic thing where you’ve got to get stretch out of an end in order to attack in the interior. That can be fine.
“But when the numbers are the numbers, and you’re 136th in college football running the ball on the perimeter, and then you tell me they’ve run it outside on the perimeter, outside the tackles, 67% of the carries, which is the fifth most in college football, now there’s a disconnect.
“Now there’s a disconnect, and this shows up on film. This shows up on film.
“The most effective drives that they had, and even stretches of drives, were when they were trying to attack downhill in between the tackles.
@BiffPoggi "The DE played it exactly right and you rarely see that. To their credit, they were really well coached up on that. There was nothing on tape to show that; it was something new." - ?????
If you are going to blindly defend the OC as the HEAD COACH, at least be accurate?
@RealTonyGarcia This year:
5.7 yards per carry between the tackles.
7.4 last 2 games.
3.3 yards outside the tackles.
1.8 last 2 games.
Its SO EASY. Good thing we refuse to do it.
@JorieAulston Inside runs that are not read option have worked all year. Then we lose 5 yards pitching outside the "Rhino" or running some slow developing read option. B1G is too fast with size for that, the DEs are eating us alive, and the safeties are 4-5 yards deep. It makes zero sense.
@Sheridanblog Michigan played Yaxel at the top of their zone, first player you would see, with two rim protectors behind him who are also in the NBA. He will adapt and be fine. Horrible take.
@WillBeStonks@Marshall23szn Every non-read interior run works. Even in this game. Seams work. Posts work. Pass plays with TEs work. We throw to the sideline with zero screen game or TEs. We pitch the ball outside of the rhino who cannot run a seam route or execute a reach block. We run slow read options.
@Underwood_szn Every interior non-read option run works. Every pass inside the hash marks - posts - crosses - seams - works. Pass success with TE vs with Rhino. I do not understand this OC at all. He has things working and refuses unless its HIS thing - and that right there is the issue.
@JuiceNukemTV@KFletchGaming They called some new plays in the first half too - that RPO slant is something Underwood can do. So yes, the playcalling was different, and it started in the first half, and in the second half it accelerated. This helps both QB. Lot of football left, competition is good.
@JonInNash@KFletchGaming The safeties are back because the RB is spread wide, and 3 WR, one of which is standing at TE right on the seam who can go vertical. A route and formation and play we have not used. We also ran an RPO slant in the first half for the first time. So both QBs got some help finally.
@CBSSportsCFB Don't sleep on Underwood. Ability is off the charts. He will be back. Footwork, fakes, shoulder direction on the option, when to plant the foot and go, all the little things. He had no QB coach his true freshman year, just an OC, and he learned the RPO, now shelved for Rhino.
@TBob53 Look how many plays they ran after already in field goal range to tie the game. The soft run defense on 1st down and generally outside the 10 is intentional in this situation. Great defensive coach.
