DNA testing cleared him in 1994. North Carolina kept him in prison for ten more years anyway. Darryl Hunt.

He was 19 when he was convicted of a 1984 rape and murder. He had no connection to it. A key witness was a Klansman's former wife. Another was a hotel worker who later admitted she had been pressured.

In 1994, DNA excluded him completely. The courts responded that the DNA did not prove someone else had acted alone, and refused to release him.
He served another decade.

In 2003 the DNA was finally run through a database. It matched a man already in prison, who confessed within days.

Darryl Hunt walked out in 2004 after nineteen and a half years.

He spent the rest of his life working with other exonerated men and people coming out of prison. He died in 2016.

The system knew he was innocent for a full decade and made him serve it. That is not a mistake. A mistake ends when you find out.

DNA cleared Darryl Hunt. North Carolina still kept him in prison for another ten years.

Her tire blew out. She pulled into a gas station, locked the doors, and waited for her family to come help.

When police arrived she was unconscious in the driver's seat.

They broke the window and fired twenty-three shots into the car.

Tyisha Miller. Riverside, California, December 1998. She was 19.

She was hit twelve times. Four officers fired.
No one was charged with anything. A grand jury declined. The Justice Department reviewed it and closed it.

The four officers were eventually fired by the city — and the police union fought that, too.
A nineteen-year-old waiting for roadside assistance, asleep behind a locked door, in a car that was not going anywhere.

Twenty-three shots. Riverside changed its entire police department after this, under state supervision. That is what it cost.
