We’re so excited to share that SB 1149 (@SenMariaEDurazo) Bereavement Leave for Chosen or Extended Family has passed the Senate Floor 39-0.
Let’s ensure workers can use bereavement leave and are not forced to choose between mourning a loved one and keeping their job!

“We have one of the largest LGBTQ+ population of any state and it’s important that our policies are evolving to fully reflect the reality of our families.” Alice Kessler from @eqca on the importance of updating bereavement leave laws to include chosen family.
With paid leave now providing 70-90% wage replacement, more workers in California are using the program.“Sixty percent of their income wasn't enough to pay their bills, and so many people are living on the edge in this state especially,” Jenya Cassidy, CAWFC. @ellywyu@LAist
Among Americans who provide care to an adult 65 or older, more than 23% provide care for a friend, neighbor, or other unrelated person. Our bereavement leave laws should reflect the reality of caregivers.

California caregiving laws recognize chosen and extended family relationships. It’s time for bereavement leave to do the same. SB 1149, introduced today by @SenMariaEDurazo would allow workers to take bereavement leave to grieve for a chosen or extended family member.
