Following the earthquake in Colombia yesterday, IARU Region 2 asks all fellow radio amateurs to keep the below frequencies clear and to simply monitor them in case assistance is needed:
▶️80m: 3985 kHz
▶️40m: 7060, 7240, and 7275 kHz
▶️20m: 14300 kHz
▶️17m: 18160 kHz
▶️15m: 21360 kHz
▶️2m: 146.520 MHz (simplex)

If you've ever written embedded C/C++ code for a microcontroller, you've likely used one of these protocols to let hardware components talk to each other.

💡 Need to read a sensor? Drive an LCD? Write to external memory?
That’s where I2C, SPI, and UART come in — the essential communication backbone of embedded development.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔌 UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter)

Point-to-point, asynchronous

No clock signal required

Great for serial communication between PC and MCU

Simple & low-cost — but not ideal for multi-device setups

🔄 I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit)

Synchronous, 2-wire (SDA & SCL)

Supports multiple masters and slaves

Perfect for sensors & peripherals with unique addresses

Slower than SPI, but scalable and efficient

⚡ SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface)

Synchronous, full-duplex

4 lines: MISO, MOSI, SCLK, SS

Very fast — ideal for displays, SD cards, memory chips

Needs more wiring for multiple devices

Why does this matter?
Choosing the right protocol directly impacts speed, power efficiency, scalability, and cost.
Mastering these invisible connections makes your embedded systems more reliable and optimized — whether you're building a smartwatch or an industrial controller.

Monday morning debate time! ☕⚡

What came first: The antenna or the radio?

Did Hertz build the first antenna to catch a wave, or did the radio circuit exist before the wire was ever strung?

Sound off below! 👇

[GOWIN SEMICONDUCTOR @GOWIN_SEMI]

The GOWIN ecosystem continues to be adopted by the open-source FPGA community!

Support for GOWIN FPGAs has been added to the popular #fCAPZ FPGA debug toolchain!

fCAPZ is an open-source, vendor-agnostic suite of FPGA debug cores, including, among others, an Embedded Logic Analyzer (ELA) for waveform capture and an Embedded I/O (EIO) for runtime read/write of fabric signals. Coupled with OpenOCD, fcapZ opens up a new realm of debugging possibilities:

* No more fiddly, platform-specific, GUI-based configuration of debug cores.
* No more interrupted synthesis / PAR flow for debug core wire-up.
* Simple plug-and-play debug cores, platform-agnostic interface.
* Command line-based, i.e. probe, capture, with a multitude of debug options.
* Automated, AI-based review of debug capture
* Allows waveform review using open-source viewers such as Surfer or GTKWave.

For those wishing to see fcapZ in action, @BrisbaneSilicon has integrated it into the example project for their popular BRS-100-GW1NR9 FPGA development board!

The adoption of the GOWIN ecosystem by the open-source community is continuing, making FPGA access even easier.

Getting started with embedded development often begins with the right platform.

Microchip’s Curiosity and Curiosity Nano boards are designed to help engineers and makers quickly prototype and experiment with PIC and AVR microcontrollers. With integrated debugging, flexible expansion options, and support for Microchip’s MPLAB development ecosystem, these platforms aim to simplify the path from idea to working prototype.
