I participated in the 74th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers held in Djibouti, which reviewed key regional developments and challenges affecting the IGAD region. The discussions focused, among other issues, on regional peace and security, the evolving situation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandab, and developments in Sudan, Somalia, and South Sudan. Particular attention was given to the role IGAD can play in facilitating dialogue, promoting political solutions, and supporting regional peace and stability.

The session also considered the current financial and institutional situation of IGAD, underscoring the need to strengthen the organization’s institutional capacity, financial sustainability, and operational effectiveness so that it can more effectively discharge its mandate and respond to emerging regional challenges.

BRICS offers Ethiopia support free from Western pressure

Ethiopia, a vibrant African nation of more than 130 million people, has much to gain from its BRICS partnership – and much to offer, Tsegaye Wondwossen Bekele, Sputnik Africa managing editor, said on WION.

“Getting loans from Western institutions often came with strict political demands and rules that hurt nationals' independence,” he notes, adding that BRICS and the New Development Bank provide a viable alternative for developing nations.

Ethiopia is currently working on six major projects, including a civil nuclear plant in partnership with Russia’s state atomic energy agency Rosatom, and is conducting settlements with BRICS nations in national currencies, moving away from the US dollar.

Across the Red Sea, intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi territory and infrastructure have renewed fears of wider conflict. Combined with severe disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, this threatens energy supplies and raises insurance, freight and security costs for routes serving Berbera.

Ethiopia’s search for diversified maritime access adds another strategic layer. Its dependence on Djibouti, interest in alternative corridors and unresolved regional tensions mean that ports are no longer merely commercial infrastructure—they are central to Horn diplomacy and security.

For Somaliland, Berbera’s importance is therefore rising. The opportunity is to establish Somaliland as a secure, regulated and dependable maritime corridor through stronger coastal surveillance, cargo controls, intelligence-sharing and emergency-response capacity.

Somaliland should promote Berbera primarily as a reliable commercial gateway and contributor to freedom of navigation. Its long-term advantage will come from providing stability without becoming entangled in competing military blocs.

The central message is clear: piracy, port competition and Middle Eastern conflict can no longer be assessed separately. The Horn of Africa and Red Sea now constitute one interconnected political-security environment.

It was a pleasure to meet Prime Minister @narendramodi and exchange views on strengthening the India–Ethiopia partnership in my first Official Visit to India.

Our discussions focused on enhancing defence cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building, mining, and our partnership towards COP32. These areas hold immense potential to deepen practical cooperation and create new opportunities for our peoples.

India and Ethiopia share deep historic ties, longstanding cultural connections, and strong bonds between our people. Yet, much of the potential between our two countries remains untapped. I believe the time is right to translate our shared history and goodwill into a more ambitious and mutually beneficial partnership which is grounded in technology, skills, investment, sustainable development, and stronger people-to-people ties.
