Bangkok has two phases. Most people only meet one. 🇹🇭

Phase one is what every visitor does. Wat Arun at sunset, cameras out, everyone chasing the same golden hour shot. Chatuchak Market on a Saturday, 15,000 stalls and a river of people moving in one direction. Song Wat Road, Bangkok's old Chinese trading street, now filling up fast with pop up events and photo spots. Wat Paknam and its towering pagoda, already a bucket list stop for half of Instagram. Good spots, real spots, but you're one of a thousand people there that day. 📸

Phase two is where Bangkok and Thailand actually start talking to you. It's Chumphon's islands, a dive and snorkel scene most travelers skip on the way south to Koh Tao. It's Ranong, hot springs, mangrove forests, and a border town vibe barely touched by tourism. It's national parks where you can hike for hours and not pass another person. It's secluded islands with no jet ski rental stand, no beach club speaker blasting house music, just sand, water, and quiet. 🌿

Same country, completely different experience. The gap between phase one and phase two is where the real memories live.

WTF Is Tofu? 🤯🇹🇭

11 years ago I was hesitant about Thai food. Today, the more I eat it, the more I'm obsessed.

I'm still careful about what I eat and where though. Random street vendors in sketchy sois, I usually skip. But when I follow locals, I keep finding real gems all around Thailand. My rule : if it's crowded, it's safe to eat. Locals don't queue for bad food.

Another tip, forget pad thai and pad krapao for a second. Step out of your comfort zone and try other Thai dishes (just ask no chili to save your taste buds). You'll be surprised how many incredible menus exist beyond the tourist classics, some of them will probably become your new favorites. 🍜

And here's a hot take : skip the Michelin star Thai restaurants too. That's the beauty of Thai food, it's affordable, and you can find cheap spots that taste better than fine dining. Though I'll admit, one of my favorite Thai meals ever was at a 5 star hotel lol : Anaala Beach Restaurant in Natai beach (near Phuket).

Last advice : don't fully trust Google reviews. Everything sits at 4.5 stars, but the actual gap in quality and taste between places is huge. 🧐

🇹🇭🍜 Song Wat, the street Bangkok forgot then fell back in love with

Song Wat Road sits right behind Chinatown, along the Chao Phraya river, in an area that used to be nothing but spice traders and century old shophouses. A few years ago it was completely under the radar. Today it's often called the coolest neighborhood in Bangkok. ☕

Old warehouses and shop fronts have been turned into specialty coffee shops, roasteries and concept stores, all under a local movement called Made in Song Wat. You'll find industrial style cafes like Local Boys Coffee open from 8am, minimalist spots like Choch SongWat inside century old buildings, and hidden gems like a Parisian style patisserie tucked into a side alley.

The street is also covered in murals, dozens of them, changing every few months, which makes it a favorite for photographers and street art lovers. 🎨

But what really shows how big Song Wat has become is the brands showing up here. Nike turned the whole road into a football fashion runway for its Goal Dang campaign, with a street parade and pop up store mixed into the old shophouses. Netflix took over the district in December for a Stranger Things tribute, transforming the old warehouses into Hawkins itself. And right now, Netflix is back with a free East Palace pop up running July 18 to 26, just steps from MRT Wat Mangkon. 🎬

At night the vibe shifts completely. Rooftop bars look over the river with sunset views and cocktails, while low key spots keep the old Bangkok energy going till late.

What makes Song Wat special is that nothing got erased to make room for the new. Spice merchants still work a few doors down from a specialty coffee bar, and old Thai Chinese families still sell herbs and dried goods at the end of the street. 🌇

One Morning in Bangkok, Quiet 🌿

Who thought Bangkok could be so quiet. Before 7am, the city switches off its chaos and Lumpini Park takes over: 58 hectares of green right in the middle of downtown, Bangkok's biggest public park, home to around 400 water monitor lizards gliding through the lake and along the jogging paths like nobody's business 🦎

A few kilometers north, Chatuchak Park and its sister parks Queen Sirikit and Wachirabenchathat form over 112 hectares of connected green space, with lotus ponds, old rain trees and a 3km car-free loop where locals do tai chi before the heat hits.

Bangkok actually has 40 major parks and close to 9,000 green spaces total, plus a hidden network of over 1,600 canals, the khlongs that once earned it the name "Venice of the East" 🚤 Most tourists never see this side of the city, they land, hit the malls and temples, and skip the mornings when Bangkok breathes.

Ok, I think I found the best place to live in Phuket 🏝️
Or at least somewhere to spend a few days with friends and family while I work harder and save for it 😄

Malaiwana Residences sit on Naithon beach, right by the famous stairway down to the sand. Quiet, never crowded, feels like a private beach.

They offer several villa types. I stayed in the 4 bedroom duplex and loved every part of it. Huge bedrooms, super comfy, great design, big living room and kitchen, sea view from every room, infinity pool 🌊 This is the kind of place I see myself living in one day.

Rent it through Elite Havens and you get full staff, cleaning, cooking, groceries, everything covered. Always 5 stars with them ⭐️

Now back to work, so I can save up and buy a unit there 😉

This town is Thailand's best secret 🇹🇭

Chiang Khan, tucked along the Mekong River in Loei province, right on the border with Laos. Wooden shophouses over a century old line the riverside walking street, and the whole town still feels like Thailand before mass tourism found it. 🇹🇭

Every morning at sunrise, monks walk the main street for alms giving, a quieter and more intimate version of what draws crowds to Luang Prabang across the river.

Evenings bring a laid back night market along Chai Khong Road, cheap Isaan food, Mekong fish dishes, and coffee shops built right over the water.

A short boat ride takes you to Kaeng Khut Khu rapids, best seen around November to January when the water level drops and exposes the rocks.

Guesthouses inside the old wooden houses run as low as 300 to 600 baht a night, and the nearest airport is Loei, about 45 minutes away, or a 6 to 7 hour drive from Bangkok. 🏘️

No beach clubs, no big resorts, just a slow river town that somehow still flies completely under the radar. 🌅

You don't get some of these during high season in Thailand.

This was my exact trip last year in july/august : Chiang Mai, Khao Sok and Krabi, and it was nowhere near what people imagine when they hear "rainy season." 🇹🇭

Two weeks with my family, mostly sunny days, a few short showers here and there, never an entire day lost.

Doi Inthanon's waterfalls were running at full strength, the jungle in Chiang Mai was every shade of green, and Khao Sok's limestone karsts looked even more dramatic wrapped in mist and low cloud.

Rain there mostly comes as quick afternoon bursts, not all day downpours, and it clears the humidity and dust out of the air so everything looks sharper afterward.

Krabi gave us some of the most incredible sunsets we've had in Thailand, since the clouds after a shower catch the colors better than a totally clear sky ever does. ☔

Less crowded temples, cheaper hotels, greener landscapes, and skies that put on a show once the rain passes. If anything, July and August might be an underrated time to visit. 🌅

Rainy season Thailand ended up being the best decision 🌧️

🚨 SOLD OUT, but... 🏮

Just like last year, Chiang Mai's biggest lantern festival is sold out (24-25th November).
The only tickets left start at a brutal 12,000 THB ($360), and honestly, not worth it: chaotic organization, bad transport, very basic food.

Good news, you don't need that one. Here are solid alternatives, usually $100-150 :

1️⃣ Yee Peng Lanna International (Mae Jo / Lanna Dhutanka)

2️⃣ Horizon Village & Resort

3️⃣ Moonlight Sky Lantern Festival

More smaller venues will pop up closer to the dates 👀

You can also enjoy loy krathongs floating down the river, especially near Narawat Bridge in the city center. Just keep in mind, all the big mass lantern release events are private, ticketed experiences 🎟️

🗺️ Steal My Hokkaido February Itinerary

Winter Hokkaido in February is one of the most magical trips I've ever done, and also one of the most competitive to book. High season with the snow festivals means the best hotels fill up 6 months in advance. I booked last August and most properties were already 90% full. If this is on your list, start planning now. 📅

Here's the route across 12 days:

Sapporo, 4 days: Sapporo Snow Festival with massive illuminated ice sculptures, Susukino Ice Festival, Sapporo Beer Museum, Mount Moiwa night view and Shiroi Koibito Park. 🏔️

Otaru, 2 days: Snow Light Path Festival along the canal, fresh uni and crab on Sushi Street, Mount Tengu Ropeway for night views over Ishikari Bay. 🦀

Asahikawa, 2 days: Asahikawa Winter Festival, Asahiyama Zoo penguin parade on snow, day trip to Sounkyo Gorge ice festival with illuminated ice caves. 🐧

Biei and Furano, 2 days: Blue Pond frozen under snow, Seven Stars Tree, Shirahige Waterfall, Ningle Terrace at night and outdoor onsen at Shin Furano Prince Hotel. ❄️

Tomamu, 3 days: Hoshino Resorts right on the ski tracks, Unkai Terrace sea of clouds at sunrise, Ice Village with ice chapel and ice bar, Shikaribetsu Kotan open-air hot spring on a frozen lake. 🌊
