NATO is NOT a defensive alliance.

NATO's expansion in Europe came alongside the invasion of Afghanistan, the bombing of Libya, military action to back separatists in Yugoslavia and the development of a military partnership with Israel.

Whether you support any or all of those actions, you can't call them "defensive" because there was - in no instance - a viable threat to a NATO member.

NATO's wars gave grounds for Russians to perceive its expansion as an existential threat - sustaining Putin's popularity - and they created precedents for the military action Russia has taken in Ukraine.

Constantly saying NATO is a defensive alliance doesn't make it a fact. We need to subject such claims to critical analysis. As JFK famously said, to achieve peace, we have to start by also reexamining "our own attitude - as individuals and as a Nation - for our attitude is as essential as theirs."
