The U.S. quietly deployed elements of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment (“Geronimo”) of the 82nd Airborne Division to Israel on "temporary duty," according to a U.S. Army deployment order issued April 7.

While the Pentagon publicly stated only that the unit was deploying to the Middle East under Central Command, it did not disclose the Israel deployment.

The deployment was linked to U.S.-Israeli contingency planning developed since February for ground operations that would involve them seizing Kharg Island and parts of Iran’s coastline.

The 82nd Airborne, a rapid-response force trained for airborne assaults, still has personnel in Israel, although no immediate ground operation is expected.

Context:
Iran’s fired a missile barrage on Israel (June 7): in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier that day. Israel’s defenses intercepted the attacks, but this marked Tehran’s first direct strike on Israel since the U.S.-brokered April ceasefire.

President Trump publicly announced he was calling Netanyahu to urge him NOT TO retaliate, stating, “Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one.” He emphasized that further escalation would derail ongoing U.S. negotiations for a broader deal with Iran.

In a Financial Times interview published today, President Trump said Netanyahu “won’t have any choice” but to accept whatever Iran deal the U.S. reaches, stating: “I call the shots. I call all the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn’t call the shots.”

Netanyahu’s reported response: Israeli officials say Netanyahu pushed back during the call but ultimately “pseudo-agreed” to delay any strike on Iran for several more days to give diplomacy a chance.

Meanwhile, Mark Levin is shitting his pants and thinks Trump is turning on Israel.
