Many Southeast Asian nations will have to claw themselves out of the Covid crisis. Some of this was preventable. @TheAtlantic takes a look at what’s happening there (and I weigh in on Thailand’s hapless political mismanagement) https://t.co/otEfPNz2FA
@jonrussell@AmySeaker Yes, Jon. We were in an enviable position, and it was squandered. (PS: this isn’t about winning a Twitter argument, Amy. Lost enough stuff already, thanks.)
The situation in Thailand worsens. The financial cost of lockdown after lockdown, without government aid or recourse, a simmering political crisis, a shortage of vaccines, and a military dictatorship's arrogant and incompetent management will have consequences for years to come.
@AmySeaker From my perspective, and speaking for those of us with the unfortunate fate of a career in the hospitality industry, a whole hell of a lot of countries have dealt with this better than Thailand.
@jonrussell@aulia I think this is what tech people call 'disruptive' and it's just that. Except only in bad ways. Unless eating low-cost, low-care food out of an unregulated cloud kitchen delivered by underpaid motorcycle drivers in order to enrich tech investors is your idea of a good thing.
@jonrussell@aulia There's only one way to survive and/or prosper with grab/foodpanda/other delivery platforms, and that is to design your business around their insane fees and drive your costs down to a minimum. It's not saving traditional restaurants and street food vendors. It's bankrupting them
It makes me so angry that Thailand has come to this point despite a fairly solid public health system, despite capable medical personnel, despite so many talents in our country. Because of a bunch of greedy, incompetent old men who don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves!🤬
Since Prayut, Anutin, and this wobbly ship of fools sealed off the country, therefore preventing an early surge (which *is* admirable), they’ve pretty much done everything wrong. The people — not the government — saved Thailand early. And now their government has failed them.
