UPDATE: Dawa Sherpa has been transferred to Kathmandu for further medical treatment after his miraculous survival on Mt Everest.

The 52-year-old Sherpa climber, who was found alive near Crampon Point after days alone high on the mountain, is suffering from severe frostbite and exhaustion. Details to follow!

On this day, 3 June 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made history by becoming the first people to reach the summit of an 8,000-metre peak, standing atop Annapurna I (8,091 m) in Nepal.

Their ascent marked a turning point in mountaineering history. It was humanity's first successful climb of any mountain above 8,000 metres and was accomplished without the use of supplementary oxygen.

The French Annapurna expedition, led by Maurice Herzog, included Louis Lachenal, Gaston Rébuffat, Lionel Terray, Jean Couzy, Marcel Schatz, filmmaker Marcel Ichac, expedition doctor Jacques Oudot, and diplomat Francis de Noyelle.

Slovak climber Lenka Poláčková 🇸🇰 successfully summited Mt Lhotse (8,516 m), the world’s fourth-highest mountain, on 23.05.2026, 09:55 NPT, without the use of supplementary oxygen and without personal Sherpa or high-altitude porter support.

In an emotional statement after the climb, Poláčková shared that although she stood alone on the summit, the ascent belonged to both her and her husband and climbing partner, Jan “Honza” Poláček. Battling a persistent respiratory illness for nearly three weeks, Jan was forced to turn back around 200 meters below the summit. However, Lenka described his unsupported climb to ~7,700 m without oxygen as “far greater than the symbolic cherry on top.”

The pair also dedicated the ascent to the memory of climbers connected to Everest and Lhotse who remain forever tied to these mountains: Jozef Just, Peťo Božík, Dušan Becík, and Jaro Jaško.

Born on this day, 1951.04.06; Josef Rakoncaj, Czech climber, he remains the only climber to have summited K2 from both, the Chinese side (1983) and the Pakistani side (1986). More, he scaled Nanda Devi in 1981, Lhotse Shar in 1984, Broad Peak in 1986, Annapurna I in 1988, Manaslu in 1989, Shisha Pangma Central-Peak in 1990, and Nanga Parbat in 1992.

October 2020 was my first time into the throne room of the Karakoram, after ten years of continuous expedition climbing and skiing in the nearby Himalaya (87 expeditions).

It was magic, because I’d dreamt about it for so long and then to finally be there and to live it was true happiness. Because I then knew I had so much further to go. And then this brought me even more peace. Because there’s simply too much. Thank goodness for that.

This was with a full framed Nikon D-SLR in the evening, after we had reached Concordia. I could tell you the name of the peak and its history, but who cares. Let’s just enjoy it for being what dreams are made of. #Karakoram #light
