We have a Prime Minister brave enough to call out the Brexit elephant in the room. Leaving the #EU was the biggest mistake of my lifetime. Moving closer to what the EU is now and the world in the mess it is in is both challenging and exciting.
I’m not going to agree with Andy Burnham on everything, but this statement needed to be said by a Prime Minister. After the Conservatives suppressed the truth for years, this took courage.
@andyburnham has finally said what millions of people have known for years: Brexit has done more harm than good.
This isn’t about relitigating 2016, it’s about being honest about the damage and deciding, with evidence, how to repair it.
The economic case:
Brexit didn’t take back control; it took away choices - making trade harder, investment weaker, and families poorer.
On the way forward:
The Prime Minister is right that all options must now be on the table - a customs union, single-market alignment, a Swiss style model, associated membership as Canada, Australia and New Zealand are pursuing - and leaving the door open to ultimately rejoining; depending on where the EU and the world are in the 2030s.
But this must be done carefully, transparently and with the country brought with us, not divided again.
On trust:
People were promised control, prosperity and lower immigration. They were let down.
The decent, honest thing now is not to pretend it worked, but admit the failure, set out the real choices, and let people decide Britain’s future with the facts in front of them.
Fixing #Brexit is not a silver bullet. But it is a necessary step towards a Britain that is secure, prosperous, fair and confident in the world.

Five years on and I am reminded of why I voted to remain in the #EU - it is precious, it has given so much and has a great deal more to give. https://t.co/ngrHkV1rdV
Brick by brick, step by step, we will regain our seat at the European table. Make no mistake, whilst progress is being made, there's a long way to go!
A quick reminder; Brexit cannot be made to work, for anyone!

Thank you for saying this. The Labour government are on a hiding to nothing given the state of this country. Everything they do will be wrong in someone’s eyes. For me, they are doing right. Not that I gain financially but that my grandchildren may have country worth living in.
I want to draw attention to a remarkable book by @williamnhutton This Time No Mistakes - How to remake Britain. It explains so well where we are and whither we might go. https://t.co/GgZXEcBCy6
This is the law of the death camps. Consider the parallel of the inmate of the concentration camp who is given the choice of being killed or killing. Is this the new Britain? Prosecutors target smuggled people who were forced to pilot small boats https://t.co/nzgn28qZJU
Where is Lloyd George when you need him? In 1914 we were outgunned and desperately short of ammunition. It was the great man’s ‘men of push and go’ who turned the nation’s industrial muscle to the war effort. https://t.co/cGXyZt3McZ https://t.co/lxvsMpef4m
@williamkeegan My worry remains about inward investment. All too often this meant sales of British companies to foreign corporates. We now lack corporates with the size, skills or strength to play on the world stage. @GSK@AstraZeneca@RollsRoyce and @JCBmachines are notable exceptions
