Congratulations to all our winners in the LIV Latin Declamations this year. Well done to Sanvi in particular for her performance of Pliny's description of the eruption of Vesuvius was moving and highly dramatic! She will go into the final against the winners from English and MFL.
As part of the school's Cross Curricular Challenge, we were all encouraged to think about how our subjects related to the theme of 'Gold'. Here's what our pupils came up with for Classics!
On this day in 63BC, Cicero delivered his final Catilinarian oration on the fate of the conspirators who had been captured. This is also therefore the same date on which Cato bested Caesar in the senatorial debate, and convinced the senators to approve the death penalty.
On this day in 8BC, the Roman poet Horace died. A prolific writer, whose works included the Odes and the Satires, he is perhaps best known as the originator of the phrase 'carpe diem', as well as 'dulce et decorum est', which Wilfred Owen would so memorably twist.
On this day in 111, Antinous was born. A lover and favourite of Emperor Hadrian, he died in mysterious circumstances on the Nile in 130, and the grieving emperor deified him.
On this day in 9AD, Vespasian was born. Initially a successful general, he came to power after the Year of Four Emperors in 69AD and established the Flavian Dynasty. During his reign, construction of the Flavian Amphitheatre was begun. It is more commonly known as the Colosseum.
