GOING BEYOND FANDOM: BTS fans join forces with Philippine Red Cross to save lives

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and Jungkookies, the devoted fan group of BTS member Jungkook, have once again demonstrated that fandom can be a powerful force for good. Hosting their third annual bloodletting activity on August 24 at the PRC Logistics and Multipurpose Center (PLMC), they showed that ARMYs are not just fans—they are heroes.

The blood donation drive, aptly named “Golden X Unity: United to Save Lives,” was more than just a gathering of BTS fans. It was a celebration of compassion and community spirit, held in honor of Jungkook’s upcoming 27th birthday on September 1, 2024. By turning their admiration for Jungkook into a life-saving initiative, Jungkookies have shown that fandom can extend far beyond admiration—it can be a platform for making a real difference in the world.

“Blood donors are heroes. I’d like to thank the organizers of this bloodletting event and all the BTS fans for joining us in saving lives,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon. “This event is a proof to the power of fandom to drive positive change.”

PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwen Pang echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of community involvement in maintaining a robust blood supply: “With PRC’s 108 blood service facilities, 32 blood centers, 76 blood collecting stations, and 15 apheresis centers across the nation, we are committed to ensuring that there is always a sufficient blood supply. The support from groups like Jungkookies is invaluable in helping us achieve this mission.”

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the bloodletting activity brought together ARMYs and walk-in donors, resulting in 143 blood units collected on the day. Since its inception in 2022, this joint initiative has gathered a total of 401 blood units, demonstrating the significant impact that fandoms can have as they come together for a good cause.
