@SpookyTanuki @KenPenders If you go back and read the story you'll notice that there are at least 16 Chaos Emeralds depicted, if memory serves.

The version of Chaos Emeralds depicted in the old comics was always very different to the games, and there's really no way to reconcile them.

If you want a broader understanding, I'd recommend looking into copyright law yourself. Though it is pretty dull stuff.

Plus at the end of the day copyright law is indistinct and relies a lot on individual interpretation.

@JamesSt450 Longclaw has a lot of story context around her that's unique to the film. There's no getting around her being a specific part of that specific movie.

And the thing about copyright law in the US is that it's not really about characters. People in fandom think of things through the lens of individual characters, but the law is concerned with the work.

While only people actually working on Sonic nowadays could tell the whole truth, based on what I've seen it does seem like Sega has a different attitude now WRT western content.
