No importa cuánto puedas donar.

✨🔭 NGC 6791 is one of the most scientifically valuable open star clusters in our galaxy. Located in the constellation of Lyra, it lies approximately 13,300 light-years from our planet and has an apparent magnitude of 9,5.
🧓👴✨ What sets it apart are its extreme age and high metallicity: it is estimated to be around 8 billion years old, making it one of the oldest open clusters known.
Most old clusters are typically poor in metals because they formed early in the universe's history, before multiple generations of stars had enriched the interstellar medium with heavy elements through supernovae and stellar winds. However, NGC 6791 is unusually metal-rich.
👽 This suggests that it formed in a region of the galaxy that had already undergone significant chemical enrichment. This combination of old age and high metallicity is rare, offering us a rare chance to study the evolution of stars in our Milky Way.
🔩 With a physical diameter of around 13 light-years, the cluster contains several thousand stars, including evolved red giants, white dwarfs and blue stragglers — stars that appear younger than they should be.
🤩 NGC 6791 can be observed tonight, when the constellation of Lyra is high in the evening sky. To locate it, start from the bright star Vega and move southeast towards the border between Lyra and Cygnus. Although it is classified as an open cluster, its great distance and compactness give it a globular-like appearance.
🔭 Due to its faintness and dense star field, it is really difficult to observe with small instruments. A Cassegrain telescope with an aperture of more than 200 mm is recommended to resolve individual stars, especially under dark sky conditions with good seeing. Visually, it appears as a faint, grainy patch. My #astrophotography below is a 40-minute exposure using my Vaonis #Vespera2 smart telescope, see my review at https://t.co/xmHppf063o
🦣 The light that we now see from NGC 6791 began its journey in ~11,300 BCE during the Late Upper Palaeolithic period, when anatomically modern humans were spreading across Europe, Asia and the Americas. This was the age of the last great Ice Age, a time of hunter-gatherer societies and flint tools, as well as the earliest known examples of symbolic cave art.
In regions such as southern France and Spain, people were painting animals on cave walls, living in small groups and developing complex languages and cultures.
🌍❄️ At that time, our planet was still in the Pleistocene epoch, characterized by cycles of glaciation and the dominance of Ice Age megafauna such as woolly mammoths, and sabre-toothed cats. Sea levels were lower due to vast ice sheets covering much of the Northern Hemisphere, and many land bridges that are now submerged—such as the Bering Land Bridge—connected continents, allowing the migration of early humans and animals. Life on Earth was harsh but still diverse and dynamic.
🎵 The constellation that hosts it, Lyra, represents the lyre of the legendary musician Orpheus in our Greek #mythology, whose music could enchant 🪄🎼 our ancient gods, mortals and even stones. The presence of the enigmatic NGC 6791 cluster within Lyra adds symbolic weight — it is a quiet chorus of ancient stars, 🎶✨ singing across time. Observing NGC 6791 is like listening to a faint cosmic melody composed billions of years ago: a stellar relic whispering tales older than Earth itself.
Not all wonders lie in brightness or fame; some, like these ancient #stars, reward patience and curiosity with deep insights into stellar and human history alike.
Beautiful NGC6791 !
Clear skies ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Drove down the Baja California Peninsula yesterday. Many magic moments—especially at dusk. Four zooms of the same view—from far to tight. Couldn't decide which I liked best. Love that li'l strip of Pacific visible poking between the hills. ♥️ #Mexico
