@gabe_creative So many sci-fi will use the a virtual architecture to describe the unrealistic feel . But Ghost in the shell used Hong Kong cityscape, increasing the immersion of the audiences. Maybe the director is trying to tell us all of this could happen in our future, and it is in sight.
