On March 2, 2025, the life of Caden Hawkins—a kind, hardworking young man from Texas—was changed forever.

At just 22 years old, Caden had already been through more hardship than many face in a lifetime. He was the sort of son parents prayed for: respectful, gentle, compassionate, and never afraid of a hard day’s work. For years he worked in the oil field, building a future with his own hands. But a horrific oil field accident left him brutally injured, with lasting impairments he will carry for the rest of his life. Even then, he refused to give up. Instead of letting tragedy define him, he chose to rebuild. He enrolled in school, determined to earn a degree that would keep him in the industry he loved—even if he could no longer roughneck because of his injuries.

He fought for a new beginning.

But that fight took an unimaginable turn.

On that early March morning, Caden was driving through New Mexico, following his GPS while chatting with his parents on the phone. He was lost but calm, simply trying to get back on the right road.
What he didn’t realize was that his GPS had routed him toward a border crossing he had no intention of approaching.

Before he understood what was happening, he found himself stuck—unable to back up, unable to turn around. As he sat there, confused and still on the phone with his mother, seven armed men surrounded his truck. Guns drawn. Voices shouting. No explanations given.

They ordered him out of his vehicle.

As they circled his truck—recording it, inspecting it, treating him as though he were a criminal—they discovered a pistol in the vehicle. A pistol legally purchased in Texas. A pistol he was legally carrying in the state he was in. Nothing illicit. Nothing smuggled. Nothing hidden.

And still…
they took him.

Still on the phone with his mother, he said words no parent should ever have to hear:

“Mom… I’m being arrested. I’m not sure for what.”

Then the line went dead.
