On 9 September 1939, Mirosław Ferić destroyed a German bomber during the invasion of Poland. A year later, he became a #BattleOfBritain ace with 303 Squadron by shooting down eight German planes in less than 40 days.
He died in 1942 at the age of 26.

#OTD in 1939, “Black Monday” took place in Warsaw during the German invasion of Poland. In a 10-hour continuous raid, German aeroplanes dropped 630 tons of bombs on the city, killing 10,000 and wounding 35,000 civilians.
At the age of 100, Danuta Jeżewska 🇵🇱, pseudonym Maria, a nurse in the Warsaw Uprising, passed away
She had been involved in the underground movement since February 1941 and, during the Warsaw Uprising, helped rescue the wounded.

Marian Pisarek, a Polish fighter ace, flew with the Polish 303 Squadron during the #BattleOfBritain. He was killed in 1942 at the age of 28, leading the Wing over France in Spitfire BM307.
His body was never found.
Pisarek was born #OTD in 1912.

304 Bomber Squadron airman Lt John Franklin (Mieczysław Frąckiewicz) is celebrating his 104th birthday today. He was assigned to 304 Squadron as a radio operator. In 1945, his crew sank a German U-boat.

303 Squadron was withdrawn for a rest #OTD in 1940. It claimed the largest number of aircraft shot down (126 kills in six weeks) of the 66 Allied fighter squadrons engaged in the Battle of Britain, even though it joined two months after the Battle had begun.
