A PlayStation 5 owner faced a 30 minute lockout from a digital copy of Ghost of Yotei. The console required a lengthy network license verification process to start the game.
Such issues occur due to rights verification on secondary devices. During server or internet outages launching any purchased digital games becomes completely blocked.
Physical discs protect from these errors but Sony will stop making them in January 2028. In the future players will depend entirely on company online servers.

Mario Kart Tour is shutting down permanently with no offline version planned
Players are comparing it to Pocket Camp as the debate over digital game ownership heats up
More reports why Sony is trying to end physical discs:
- They want to cut out the middle man, to make more profit per sale (like remove walmart cuts etc)
- Sony thinks the fanbase will not switch platforms, they can do what they please without losing fans
- They are convinced by ignoring this issue, they fans will just accept the changes and convert to 100% digital with time.
- Sony thinks they are "too big to have commination with fans". Talking to fans has no margin benefit, so they refuse to address fans and will keep doing so
I have lost all trust and goodwill with PlayStation, no words what is happening right now. Horrible company
This is the biggest reason physical games shouldn’t disappear.

You can’t trade digital.
You can’t resell digital.
You can’t hunt bargains like this with digital.
