🧵 Forgotten Characters of the Bible - Mephibosheth, the Forgotten Prince of Israel
Mephibosheth’s story in the Bible is short but powerful. It is a tale of tragedy, grace, & covenant faithfulness.
But above all of that… he points us to Christ. Here’s his story 🧵👇🏼
I don't care how many Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, Oxford and Chatham House lectures you've attended;
Business in Africa cannot grow significantly, without reform in governance. You can't write Government out of China's growth story, and if you think you can "create Africa's Amazon/Alibaba" without logistics (roads, railways ports) or "Africa's leading AI Data Centers" without electricity, I am here to tell you that you are wasting your time.
We shy away from addressing governance, because it is risky, we could die in the process of challenging it - and also because many of us benefit from the existing corrupt, directionless order.
The Practice of Giving Testimonies.
This past Sunday, I delivered a sermon in church addressing the proliferation of testimonies that often stray from the truth about an individual's experiences. It has become imperative for the church to confront this issue surrounding testimony-giving.
For over 30 years of being a part of the church, I've witnessed testimonies crafted to inflate the ego of the pastor rather than glorify Christ. Such testimonies seek to elevate the pastor's status and feed his ego. Many who testify have learned that praising the pastor can earn them favour and admiration from the congregation. There are even instances of outright fabrication, where fantastical stories are concocted to impress the audience and curry the pastors’ favour rather than genuinely glorify God, while some are even concocted by pastor’s themselves.
Lately, we've heard tales of pastors appearing in people's dreams, delivering prophetic messages. These accounts often elevate pastors to near-superhuman status. However, such occurrences are likely because the pastor is an authority figure in the dreamer's life and the Holy Spirit has decided to use that image to communicate some spiritual truth to the individual, and not because the pastor possesses the ability to project into dreams, as these testimonies might suggest.
While testimonies can inspire and bolster faith, their primary focus should be on glorifying God, not man. We must take cues from Jesus Himself regarding testimony-giving. In Mark 1:40-45 A leper came to Jesus for healing and Jesus cleansed him and commanded him to tell no man but show himself to the priest. Than man however went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places. I wonder how many people would tell those who received healing or a miracle from their ministry to tell no one. We would rather want it broadcast on all media platforms so that we can attract huge crowds and come see the great man of God.
So why did Jesus ask this man not to tell people about his healing. Why did He command that he tell no one? Because advertising His power to heal would hinder His work of teaching.
Jesus' caution against publicizing miracles was to ensure His teaching wasn't overshadowed by sensationalism. Conversely, when Jesus healed the madman of Gadara of demons (Mark 5:1-20), He encouraged him to go home to his friends, and tell them the great things the Lord had done for him. The man departed and began to proclaim in ten cities all that Jesus had done for him; and all marvelled.
It is needful to draw a balance between what to share, when to share and with whom to share the things the Lord has done. Unfortunately, the modern Pentecostal church often prioritizes publicity over discernment. This has led to a proliferation of dubious miracles and testimonies, undermining genuine acts of faith. The church must adopt a more discerning approach, validating and authenticating testimonies, especially those concerning healing, which can be corroborated by medical professionals. It is possible to lay hands on someone and the person feels a strange sensation, falls over and is not healed. Most Christians assume that these translate into healing. It rests on the person who has received prayer to go run a medical check and confirm their healing before sharing their testimony.
Testimonies also shouldn't be confined to church settings; they can be even more impactful when shared with people you meet in everyday life. As the church confronts these challenges, it must ensure its practices align with biblical principles otherwise risk being discredited. Only by accurate grounding in the Word of God can the church navigate these challenges successfully. #testimony #apology
