Subject: Urgent – Imran Khan’s Deteriorating Health, Permanent Eye Damage & Ongoing Arbitrary Detention

I am writing to update you urgently on Imran Khan’s condition and to ask for immediate international action.

On Wednesday(April 8, 2026), Imran’s lawyer in Pakistan, Barrister Salman Safdar, was finally allowed to meet him at Adiala Jail after a gap of four months. This meeting only happened because the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the jail authorities to facilitate it. Even then, they refused to bring his wife, Bushra Bibi, to the attorney‑client meeting, despite requests and clear court directions. She was simply not produced from her cell. That defiance of the IHC is itself alarming.

During the meeting, Salman briefed Imran on all pending legal matters, including the Al‑Qadir Trust case. He found Imran mentally strong and in high spirits, but his eye condition is extremely serious. According to Salman, the eye complication continues with “major impairment” and only “little improvement,” with more treatment supposedly scheduled in two weeks.

Separately, I asked Imran’s sister, Aleema Khan, directly about his health. She said:

“Some change after first injection. But he told Salman I really can’t see you with this eye. Nor can I read from this eye. He said that the doctor said this damage is permanent.” @Aleema_KhanPK

So we now have Imran himself telling his counsel that he cannot see or read from the affected eye, and that his doctor has said the damage is permanent. This is on top of what his lawyers and the media have already reported: that he developed a blood clot in the eye (central retinal vein occlusion), his vision deteriorated massively over months, and adequate treatment was delayed until it was too late.

All of this is happening while he is being kept, in what can only be described as total solitary confinement — effectively 23–24 hours a day. Even basic legal and family access is being rationed, and outright blocked.

As you know, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has already found Imran’s detention to be arbitrary and politically motivated, and has called for his immediate release. The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Dr. Alice J. Edwards, has also warned that his conditions of detention — prolonged isolation, surveillance, lack of access to lawyers and family, and denial of proper medical care — may amount to inhuman and degrading treatment and even torture.
What has changed now is that we are no longer talking only about risk of harm. We are looking at actual, irreversible damage: a former Prime Minister, and arguably the most popular leader in Pakistan’s history, has permanently lost functional vision in one eye while in state custody, under conditions the UN has already flagged as unlawful.
